SVT And Two SVT 210av's

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been threatening to do it for a long time and I never did it until tonight...I hooked up my 69 SVT to my two 210av's in a vertical stack. "But Jim, " you may ask, "How did you get an SVT on top of those cabs?" Silly question...I lifted it No, but seriously, I put the SVT on the floor and put the cabs on top of it.

I discovered that doing so is even more awesome than the vertical stack with the cabs on the floor, because the top speaker became directly aligned with my head rather than a little below it. And because it's 10"s, I got excellent dispersion across the stage. I went all over the stage on both sides, and to my ears I had all the highs and mids that I have when I stand in front of it. Using two cabs also boosted the lows a goodly amount. Total balls!

The show was at an 800 seat theater, with my oldies band doing a set, then backing up 60's singer Johnny Tillotson. I used my modded 76 Fender PJ strung with dead Chromes, and since I didn't need OD tonight, I just went straight in, mic'ed with a Heil PR40 and no DI. I very nearly had the tone knobs on the SVT nooned. Treble slightly below noon, mids at 800 slightly past noon, and bass at 1:00.

In our set, we did "Make Me Smile" and "Beginnings" by Chicago for the first time (yes, we had 3 horns!), and I swore I could feel the ghost of Peter Cetera entering my rig...but then I remembered he's not dead and came back to my senses. We had two shows, and between shows, I listened briefly to a board tape, and the bass mix was absolutely perfect and sounded just like what I heard out of my rig. So if any soundmen ever tell me they're going to DI me again, I may have to hurt them.

If you want to do this yourself with a vintage SVT, just remember you have to daisy chain the cabs into the main speaker out from the head. If you have an SVT and a couple of these cabs, you have to try it for yourself.

I've been bouncing the idea of using those cabs in the same sort of configuration. Setting My V4 or SVT on my cab dolly, and stacking two of the 210av vertically beside'em.
My thoughts are to use something like this for smaller stuff, where My 810E or 412HE would be a bit over the top. I was pondering this or a PF350 ran through My homebrew 212'er.
Any downsides to it JimmyM?

I've tried this with a pair of ported 2x10s with tweeters stacked on end, with a PF-500, SVT-CL, and my own test bed 200W tube head. They all sound awesome. The only head I trust atop the stack is the PF tho.

I personally didnt have a downside last night. As always, though, YMMV.

Cool.... Might actually go try'em out at the local GC this weekend, provided they have two of the cabs and an SVT classic on the floor. They've got some pretty good folks working in there these days, and they didn't have any quams with let'n Me hook up what I wanted the last time I was in. I'm guessing that a goofy bassplayer isn't as bothersome as the "deadly duo" having a Slayer-riff showdown on the Line 6 guitar rigs.

Are you sure? Perhaps you should call him and check that he's OK.

Well, thank God you didn't have lay down to tweak the knobs.....at our age, that is usually a sure way to have to help getting back up.....the groupies might be a tad "put off" by that...

JimmyM, being on the ugly side of 40's I remember what those knobs sound like at noon (pretty damn loud). Sounds like a fun gig and how would compare your pf 350 with this tone ( sound adjusted of course!!)

Nice, I like those cabs.
Dear Jimmy, have you consider playing 4 of them, 2 vertically, side by side, on top of your svt (at 2 ohms) ?

I have one 210AV and wanted to ditch my 410HLF, get another 210AV, and use my LMII to have a modular set up but didnt know how it would sound (especially on the low end). Once my band gets back up and running again I think i will go this route though.

I decided to give them another shot. Still on the fence, but I did really like them last night.
