Thumbs up SVT-VR Replacement Arrived Today

Sign in to disble this ad
My SVT-VR replacement arrived today directly from Loud. The first one, the last one the retailer had in stock, was one of the Dec. '07s with the bad ground issue and had a terrible hum. I'm happy to say this one is so quiet, you can't tell it's even on after you take it off Standby. The fan is also whisper quiet; I had to look to make sure it was working. And, as everyone says, the VR sounds fantastic. I use a Bergantino NV610, a great cab, with Fender P's and J's. The Loud tech said I would be getting one of the new Korean VRs, but this one is Vietnam-built from Oct. '08. I'm really happy with it.

that's great news. congrats!
looks like a little patience and perseverance paid off. alot of people would've judged it on the bad apple that you first got.

Thanks. Now for the relay mod on JohnK's web page and to figure out some not-too-expensive preamp tube upgrades (recommendations gladly accepted). I don't think I can afford the NOS route.

I have the same head/cab combo and love it too. I have never found anything better (well I would like to try a Berg 215 just to see how it compares to the 610).
The set up really rocks with passive jazz and pbass and sounds equally good with warwicks and double humbucker botiques and Stingrays. I haven't found anything yet that doesn't sound good with it.
I've even thrown my Les Paul guitar (dual humbuckers and an acoustic piezo pick up) and a my vintage fender mustang surf guitar (with reverb pedal) at it to see what it can do. OMG - I had no idea a bass set up could make a guitar sound so good.
I'm trying to get up enough nerve to connect a keyboard to it just to see how that sounds (probably will blow the windows out of the house).
I just love it, for both guitar and bass.
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for good info on tube swaps.
Keep rockin.

Completely agree, GBass. I bought the NV610 without ever trying one; the comments here on TB and reviews were so strong I figured I couldn't go wrong.

you can for pre tubes if you don't go all mullard or telefunken.

Your fan is super quiet? Mine is rather loud. haha. Then again, when I'm actually playing it cannot be heard at all... so I guess I'm fine with it.

Jimmy, I think I read one of your posts somewhere that said you use Sylavanias and RCAs. Anything special to look for? I think I saw some Sylvanias at one place where one type was "long plate" and one was "short plate"?

you know, i can't tell minute differences in tubes. i only buy nos because there's a place nearby that sells them for a good price. and i never get the black plates or anything...the gray plates do fine for me.

IMO, generally, long plates sound better than short ones, but they're also, generally, more susceptible to microphonics.

IMO, sylvania 12AX7A's are great sounding tubes in an SVT. and while i'm not usually a fan of GE preamp tubes, i do really like GE 5814A's for the 12AU7's in a VR.

Thanks, guys. I am LOVIN' this VR; thanks for your good advice in my other thread. The relay job was a snap. I used the 2-in-1 spade connectors which made it really easy; didn't even remove the ties, so I can put it back if need be.
