SVT2 Pro vs. SVT-CL

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok... First post here

So I just picked up a SVT 2 Pro Premiere

I bought it knowing that I would need to futz around with the settings to get it sounding killer. And it does...

But not as good as my SVT Classic.

The 2 pro sound flat and compressed in comparison to my Classic, which sounds very 3D and the notes seem to jump out of the cab.

Is this normal? Am I not setting it correctly? Or is it the tubes?

The SVT CL is brand new (made in Korea) while the SVT 2 is a very early one and has JJ tubes put in all spots and has KT88 in the power section.

Maybe some sample settings for peoples SVT 2 pros would be nice.

I set the Classice with the Hi and Lo in, the gain: 5, bass: 6, Mid: 6, frequency: 4, Treble: 6, and master: 5.

That is at least what I like on the Classic.

Hard to say. Good sound is largely subjective. I thought the SVT Classic sounded stale, lifeless, and totally generic. My 2-pro (newer model) sounded pretty cool. Can't remember the settings I used, but my point is basically that people like different sounds. It's quite possible that nothign's wrong with your SVT2, it sounds just like the others that lots of people prefer to the CL. YOU however, just prefer the CL - which plenty of other people do as well.

Also possible your SVT2 needs a check up form an amp tech; cleaning, bias set, and checking the tubes. It may or may not sound better with new tubes. Mine had Groove Tubes in it if I remember correctly..whatever they came with new. Wasn't JJs.

Welcome to Talkbass, you will find much fact here and even more opinion. Tough part is figuring out which is which.

Do a search in the Amps forum. There`s at least 5 other threads comparing the two heads and a few dozen on the CL alone.

I run my classic with roughly the same settings except i wont use the ultra low engaged. It might sound ok by itself but robs all the punch and projection in band settings.

I set my early 2 pro no buttons in. Gain at about 2.5 bass: 6 mid: 7 Frequency: 2 or 3 treble: 5 master 2.5

it sounds pretty killer.

I play it through an eden 410xlt.

AFAIK the 2-pro and CL are pretty much the same circuit with the addition of the graphic eq on the 2?

Besides that point, I don't like the switches on those amps. They "boost" lows and highs by cutting mids. Not my tone. I feel like you get a lot more definition and response with more mids.

It's been a while since I had my SVT-CL, but I think I usually used positions 2 and 3 on the mid selector (450 and 880 Hz respectively) and set the mids and bass between 2 and 3 o'clock with the treble at noon. Pretty much my standard settings with tweaking to fit the room/gig/particular situation.
