svt210av cab: Is slight fuzz normal?
 

I just picked up a scratch and dent svt210av on sale from americanmusical rated @ 200W rms. Nice tight low E on my 4 string and full balanced sound up the neck. I'm powering it with an Eden wtx-260 head 180w @ 8 ohms with volume at 10 o'clock and doesn't mind if I take it up to noon. It sounds fine...pure ampeg...no breakup or farting. But when I listen close and hold a note, I hear a very slight fuzz.

Any TB'ers with this cab notice this? Is this grit part of the design or did I get a restocked cab that got reamed? Thanks.

sounds like you have something loose on the cab. Could be a number of things... start tightening things up and it may go away.

I checked all the screws. The speakers are also mounted nicely with 8 screws on each speaker...nice even torque. The fuzz comes from the center of the speakers. I have to get right up close to notice it. It's smooth.

Could be the speaker breaking up a bit, but it could be the dust cap is loose. Take a playing card and see if you can slip in in anywhere around the cab. Be gentle.

The dust caps and speakers look mint. The cab is put together and made real well.

Sometimes the wire(s) lay just near or on the cone that it buzzes. I'm talking about the speaker's wires that pass through it.

I have two and they don't do this. Sounds like a bad speaker, unless it's feedback?

Try rotating the cab 90 degrees at a time and playing to see if maybe gravity will let them fall away from the surface.

It's not feedback and placing the cab in different positions doesn't effect it.
It's a slight smooth fuzz that tracks the notes in a natural way. Being a restock
the speakers may have gotten high milage with 45 day return policy.

I've gotten some fuzz from the grill on mine literally shaking because it was pumping out so much low end. They're fantastic cabs though and I think I might pick up a second one. Can't say the speakers on mine make any sound though, but maybe I didn't listen that close either. I've been using it for almost three years now though so I should have picked up anything it was doing.

This is what I think, too. My 210av cabs don't do that unless I'm playing extremely loud.

Taking the grill off didn't do it. It's in the speakers. I thought I would try saving $80
but americanmusical has great return policy. The cab is worth $300 new.

You might want to try tightening up the screws that hold the plastic velcro thingies that hold the grill on. I had one of those rattling on mine when I first got them.

Mines sounds as clear as a bell. Try it again and turn up the volume and see if the fuzz gets louder. If it does that would confirm a problem.

Also some people will get a new cab and push it to test how loud it gets without breaking it in. Speakers get damanged that way.

Thanks everyone. The velcro mounts were screwed in tight and the grill on this cab fits very tight. I could barely get it off and it snaps back in very secure. This cab is built very well. The grill frame is even birch plywood.

The fuzz gets louder with volume. I agree with proper speaker break in.
I thought something wasn't quite right when I first plugged in at only 9 o'clock.
I'll send it back and get a factory fresh one.
