SWR 2x10 + 1x15 or Aguilar 1x12 + 1x12

Hi guys

So need some advice. I'm looking to change up my existing speaker cab configuration of an SWR 2x10 with the matching 1x15 to something with a little bit more punch and diffrent cosmetics. I've been thinking about swapping for 2 Aguilar 1x12 either in the DB or lightweight series but I have a few concerns

1. Volume- I get hired alot for more alt-rock gigs, not full blown drenched in guitar ear bleeding stuff, but I need to be able to hear myself

2. Sound- I'm really looking for a nice, balanced round sound (think Ben Kenney)

The cabs will be run with an Eden WT550. Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks from the GASn' Aussie

Zac

I'm definitely a fan of the (2) 1x12 format. And certainly more so than the 2x10 + 1x15 format.

Fortunately, there are a lot of nice 1x12 cab options out there - and most will sound nicely balanced and round, while remaining punchy - especially with that Eden head of yours. I would think the Aguilar GS112 cabs would be an even better fit than the DBs - though that's a matter of personal preference...

Depending on your budget, look also at Epifani, GK, Genz Benz, Mesa, Bergantino, etc. etc. The Avatar 1x12 is also reputed to sound very good - especially for the price...

The Aggie 1x12" cabs, both GS and DB, sound great. My good friend has 2 x GS112's with an EDEN WT550 head and it sounds fabulous. Just be aware that 2x12's won't move as much air as 2x10 + 1x15. Still, if you have sound reinforcement, I'd not worry about it.

I'm another proponent of the 2x112 cabs. I started using a 1x12 because I had a paperwieght of a blown out SWR WM12 combo. It sounded great with a BX500 alone, so I got an older Avatar Cube 112 of about the same size. I can't believe how good that mini-stack sounds. I can imagine how much better the Aguilar cabs will sound.

I'm not a fan of SWR 2x10" - they just dont compare the the berg/epi/ea cabs I have heard (and yes, I once had one). A good 2x10 will have TONS of punch.

Cool. So to further pick your brains would you guys go with a single 2x12 cab or have 2 separate 1x12 cabs? Interested to see if there is any difference in terms of volume/low end response

You can generalize only so far, as the answer will depend somewhat on the specific makes/models you have in mind. That said, the two options tend to sound much more similar than different.

I personally prefer the 1x12 format, as it's much more compact and modular - and thus more flexible - than the 2x12 alternative. I also live in a Manhattan apartment which has limited space (although bigger than most), so that's a factor for me.

There's an argument to be had that single-woofer cabs tend to have a bit greater focus than multi-woofer cabs, so there's something to consider. Also that the aggregate internal volume of two 1x12 cabs is often greater than with one 2x12, although that obviously is a case by case situation.

hhhmmmm, I've been using my two 112's for a while and love the tone.

I've been using an SWR Goliath II 4x10/2x10 combo with my SVT-2Pro, but today I just picked up a 2nd Goliath II 4x10 to use instead of the 2x10 for a full stack; and decided I was going to sell the 2x10. I was actually amazed at how great it sounds by itself. It does sound punchier than the 112's, I think. I'm starting to reevaluate which cab(s) I'm going to keep. I'm going to have to A/B theses cabs....2x10 vs 2x112.
