SWR 750 got destryoyed, replacement suggestion?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, so today is a sad day for me when the repair guy called to say my pre-fender SWR 750 is totaled. Apparently it received a ridiculously large power surge and the power amp was utterly fried.

Assuming I don't take the outside chance on getting this thing fixed and since the model I had is discontinued, any recommendations for a reasonable replacement?

I see there is a 750x out now, anyone have opinions on this? How would it stack up to the one I had?

My other amp is an SVT II, so I'm looking to hold onto the more hifi sound I got out of the 750, although maybe a bit more rock-style mids would be nice without sacrificing clarity.

Thanks

PS: oops typo in the title =X

Find one used. My drummer has one, not a bad amp. His isn't working at the moment either, or has some weird noise or something. But, they shouldn't be too hard to find used if you really liked the sound of that amp.

I think the X series was designed more to compete with the ampeg and GK type SS amps, a little more grindiness, less hifi than the earlier SWR amps IMO.

Seems a bit pricey, but a few options:

used swr's are plentiful and cheap. you should have no problem finding another 750.

GK would be more like the 750X. The thunderfunk might get you close to the original 750 sound. But, as I said, they aren't hard to find used, and if you like the tone, it may be worth looking into one. And racking it with a voltage regulator.

You should be able to find a used SWR pro 750 for under $500.

Well, he did say this...

A Genz Benz GBE750 would make a nice change of pace from your Ampeg, and would give you the "more hi-fi with mids" thing. Having said that, there are lots of used SWR amps floating about.
