SWR Basic Black Failure

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I have an SWR Basic Black that recently failed.

It was being used at a church rehearsal, at moderate volume when both speakers stopped working. There was no "pop" no other noise, just stopped producing sound. Took it to a local repair shop. They said both speakers are blown (15" woofer and the horn tweeter), but that the amp is fine. The 15" driver moves freely with no noise, but when I put an ohm-meter across the terminals it is an open circuit.

I am afraid to buy a replacement speaker in case there is something wrong with the amp that would fry a replacement.

What would cause a problem like this? Any suggestions?

On a related note, I also have the SWR Basic Black extension cab. I pulled the driver from it, and the combo cab - the driver from the extension cab had a much larger/heavier magnet. Both speakers had the SWR logo embossed on the front. Does anyone know if the two cabs were designed with different drivers?

Thanks for your help!

I can't help much with your current situation (sorry) but I was a SWR Basic Black owner several years ago. I really loved the combo but the amp developed problems - the volume would go from moderate to ear shattering all on its own. I couldn't fix it and I sadly had to get rid of it.

A good friend also had one, on my recommendation , and used it as his primary gigging amp. He wound up punting on his when it would completely cut out on stage. He had it in the shop several times and even had the main circuit board replaced, all to no avail.

I know that a lot of people have had nothing but great experience with the Basic Black, but I've always wondered if there was a period where there was an inherent design flaw in the units that caused the problems I and my friend had, as they were both purchased new around the same time.
