SWR Black Beauty - extenstion speaker?

Sign in to disble this ad
Has anyone tried an 8 ohm extension cab with this combo? I am about to get one in a trade and already have the 2x10 8 ohm cab, but figured the 2.7 ohm weirdness might neuter the sound. Anyone have experience with this?

To verify, you are looking to run three 8Ω cabinets at one time? If so you can only do this if the amp is capable of driving 2Ω otherwise it will fail.

The question is unclear. I assume the Black Beauty combo has an ext spkr output, and probably wants to see a 4 ohm minimum load, but where did 2.6 ohms come from?

The BB has a 15" 4 ohm speaker as part of the combo.

you can pair another 4ohm cab to get it up to 600w, but I only have an 8 ohm extension cab.

What will the output be like with the 8 ohm extension cab vs just the standard 4 ohm 15" @ 350w that is already part of the cab?

The BB certainly won't have a problem driving the additional cabinet (I believe they have a 2ohm min), but the internal 15" speaker in the BB will see 2/3 the power. You'll move more air than the single 15" alone, so you'll definitely have more volume, but the acoustical outputs will be mismatched, with the extension cabinet falling short of the internal cabinet.

It won't hurt anything as long as the BB can drive 2 ohms or so. Just don't be surprised if if the internal speaker is noticeably louder than the additional cab. Of course, efficiency will come into play, too.

Give it a try and see. You're unlikely to blow anything up - as long as the BB can handle 2ohms...

In this case, the ideal match up would be another 4 ohm 15. maybe you could wheel'n deal the 210 away for one. That really would give you everything you like about the combo, multiplied by more than 2. As mentioned, with the mis-matched speakers, the combo's 15 has to work much harder, while the ext cab gets little juice, (comparitively).
