SWR Goliath 3, Strange Speaker Buzz

Hi,

I've got a pre-fender SWR goliath 3. The bottom left speaker has developed a slight buzz. Not a hum, or electric noise, more of a mechanical sounding papery buzz that increases with the volume/bassiness of the amp. Certain frequencies seem to cause it to buzz more. The louder and bassier the amp is set, the louder the noise becomes. The speaker still produces the bass sound fine, its like the buzzing is overlaid. There's no visual damage to the cone, however i've noticed firmly pressing on a spot towards the outer rim of the cone seems to muffle the buzzing to the point that it disappears. Anyone seen a speaker behave like this? I wonder if its easily repaired. Thanks.

It can be repaired with a re-cone kit From what you described the speaker is damaged.

Check the tinsel leads on the back aren't touching the cone.

Maybe a bit of paper trash inside.

Loose dust cap??

end of cheap fixes???

Unfortunately wont be able to get into the cab for a few days, but thanks for the suggestions, I'll check into all of these. I've also read that the old PAS 10'' drivers had a design flaw with a screw somewhere inside that must be very tight to insure proper connection to the speaker, but to me the sound that's happening doesn't seem like that's the issue... I don't remember when it started but it may have been after ripping some really loud guitar through an old blackface bassman that was hooked up to the cab at some point.... woops.

Check the speaker connections at the back of the speaker (pull the offending speaker) and look at the connection. Mine were loose at the terminals. Tighten them on all speakers while you are at it. Got my Goliath for chump change because the seller thought speakers were blown.

I would also check that the dust cap isnt starting to come off. Them speakers are notorious for that. Easy fix to reglue them.
