Question SWR Goliath III vs Mesa Boogie Powerhouse 4x10

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I'm looking for a nice compadre for my Aguilar DB 750. For about 2 years I've been using Orange cabs OBC410 + OBC115. Now I want to switch OBC410 to something more hi-fi, while leaving OBC115 for extra punch and extended bass range.

Both cabs SWR Goliath III and Mesa Boogie Powerhouse 4x10 are known to be pretty much hi-fi. I'm looking for a consistent full frequency range with punchy mids, and beefy lows.

Please help!

I own the Goliath III. At the time it was the best sounding Cab I found.
It sounded deeper that 12s and 15s
I never expected (Back when I was a kid) 10s would sound bassier than bigger speakers.
Sounds very "lowend..or deep".
I love it...not really sure what you mean bout it being known for "Hi-Fi"...
Maybe cuz it has a tweeter/horn..whatever
I turn the tweeter down pretty low.

ANYWAY..

the Mesa ,from the times I've played it at GC, Sounds Friggin awesome.Reminds me of how I felt when I 1st tried out the Goliath III.
If I had the dough, I'd prolly get one.

Hope my ramblings helped somehow...maybe...maybe not.

Theyre both good.

Havent tested side by side with the same head...but I think the Mesa is better....then again, maybe the mesa Carbine head is just better...who knows.

BOTH CABS HAVE BEEFY LOWS.

I have some experience with something very similar:
I owned and loved a Goliath Senior (6x10) for a good 5 years or so. I loved it. I rocked it with an Ampeg SVT3, a GK800RB and then a Crown power amp rack with everything from an SWR Interstellar Overdrive Pre to a SansAmp RBI setup. The cab was always the mainstay. (though I did own and pair it up with a Big Bertha at one point, but it was too much to carry around so I sold the Bertha). the 6x10 sounded very punchy. I set it up next to an Ampeg 8x10 on more than one occasion and there was no contest; it sounds great. (I couldn't picture anyone having A-B'd the two ever choosing an Ampeg.)

BUT THEN... I got a Mesa Boogie Bass 400+. which apparently was a bit much for the that cab. That tube head has so much more low extended end than any of the other amps I ran that it would make the speakers fart at my normal full volume. I could have eq'd out the culprit frequencies but I didn't want to! SO, it was a trip to the bass store for me.

I lined up my rig next to a Mesa 4x10 and A-B'd them. The mesa handled the 400+ NO PROBLEM! (Maybe there is something to matching brands?) After deciding that the Mesa was the way to go, for the 400+ at least, I A-B'd my RBI/Crown rig on the two cabs. I can say that I didn't feel like I was losing anything I loved about the SWR by going with the Mesa 4x10.

SO... I have owned the Mesa 4x10 now for about 3+ years and haven't looked back. AND I got a smaller cab out of it (although they weighed about the same). If the Goliath Sr is anything like the Goliath III, unless you're running a 400+, you will probably be very happy with either setup. If I didn't need to switch to a cab that could handle the extended and excessive lows of that tube head, I'd probably still have my Goliath 6x10.

Sorry for the novel. Hope it was helpful.

I would advise that you swap the 15" for another 4x10.

410 will go as low if not lower than 15's

that Orange 15 is a great cab, but if you are going for a hi-fi 410 then you are better off stacking 2 of the same cab than mixing the orange and the 410

The DB750 is quite fussy regarding what cabs sound 'good' with it (by 'good', I mean a cab that can handle that big power, and also control the low end that can get a bit flubby with that head).

I like both the cabs you are considering (played a GIII for years, and the Mesa 410 is KILLER, if huge and heavy). However, if you want a bit more tightness and articulation with your DB750, you should at least consider a Bergantino HS410.

The HS410 uses ceramic drivers, and is voiced a bit 'old school' (it is based on the discontinued SA410 that was voiced to be used with a tube head and to somewhat mimic an older school sealed cab). The HS410 is a relatively small 410, moderate weight for a non-neo cab, and IMO matches up very nicely with a DB750 if you want warm low mid punch, usable but not huge low end, and some nice definition in the mids. It is a 4ohm cab, and can handle the 4ohm output of the DB750 just fine.

IMO, you would be able to elimate both your current cabs and cover virtually any gig with a single HS410 adn a DB750.
