SWR Replacement Speakers?

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I believe at least one..maybe more of the speakers in my SWR Goliath Senior 6x10 may be blown. I'm taking it into my local repair shop today..which is an SWR authorized service center. I've been reading that SWR is notorious for charging a premium on their replacement speakers..

Should I just have them replaced with different speakers? Do all 6 need to be matched?

Do they need to match no. Should they match, probably (purists will say yes). Would it bother me if they did not match, oh yea... I replaced my 10's with Eminence Delta Blues, but there are as many 10's as there are opinions out there. You need to spec you model and year of Golliath Sr to see what was in there and get some new speakers.

Buy original speakers. Or be prepare to buy some speakers that will sound really bad in your cabs. Unless you know what you're doing, it won't work.

If its an older model with pas drivers try tightening the screws on the inside of the speaker. They get loose and cause a sound like the speaker is blown.

I believe it is in older model..I bought it used at least 3 years ago. I'll try that spaz, thanks.

Hopefully I can avoid going the route of speaker replacement.

From another thread....check that the speaker leads aren't touching the cones. The tiny copper wires going to the cones from the frame where the wires are spade lugged or soldered. That can sound blown too.

SWR used PAS spakers in their Goliath series of a few years ago. Nobody would confirm what they actually were and the consnus says they were rebadged/bespoke Celestions.

Trying to get recone kits was impossible in the UK... although in the U.S plenty of people say they have them. I doubt SWR has many left...but you could ask them.

As your cab has 6 10's...I would be loking to continue with PAS..
Once you have gotten the fact that they defintely are U/S ...then pursue a recone of the original chassis if Poss...
I wouldn't mix makes...as that is a minefield.
What happens here ( UK) a lot is that people swap out PAS for Deltalites 2510's and that might create a few spares PAS's that needs homes... but to replace all 6 would be expensive. It would be cheaper to buy a second hand Goliath jnr..strip it and sell on the box..

I don't think the 2510's was an improvement but others rated it...but with 6 speakers to consider...it will not be cheap for an all or nothing change.
Plus NEO's are rising in price now.

Best solution..best a Goli jnr take out the 2 spares..knock tha cab out as a box for a few $ and you have 2 spares and the buyer has a decent box to put 2 2510's in for reasonable money.

Something I ran into years ago on a Goliath 410 (and this may not apply to the Goliath Sr.) is that the edges of the speaker baskets are "shaved" and not round. This allowed them to make the enclosure a little bit smaller, but it also prevented me from replacing the speakers with another brand when I blew them.
