SWR SM500 vs 750X

Sign in to disble this ad
Having just picked up a nice Studio 220 for home use I'm really considering a more powerful SWR for live work.

I can see that the SM500 & 750X have some significant differences in on-board tonal options but wondered if the 750X manages to retain that core SWR sound?

I'm not sure I'd use all the flexibility of the SM500 so maybe the simpler layout of the 750X would work better for me?

Then again - I'm also not sure I'd use the onboard distortion & subwave of the 750X, lol.

Maybe I should save up & go for an SM900 which at least gives me a pair of switchable graphics to dial in two different core sounds. . .

No SWR guys here that can help

Looks like I'm on a straight choice between the SM500 & the 750X now

Don't remember playing the SM500, but I really liked the 750. I ended up buying the 350 but missed the headroom of the 750. If I were in the market for an SWR, I'd be looking at Thunderfunk.
I know, this is the 3rd time I mentioned Thunderfunk today.

used to have an sm-500 and liked it just fine. played a 750x occasionally, though, and i think it's a good head, too, and yes, it's got the sound imho. ok, so there's not a graphic on it, but i find graphics to be a bit of overkill on bass amps anyway.

hmmm, i see they've disco'ed the sm-500. shame. good stuff.

You might consider a used SM400; plenty of power, very well built, and can be found for approx $300 - $350 on the used market

I absolutely love my 750x. I've owned a Super Redhead and a SM-900, and the 750x is right there with the SWR "sound". The distortion on it is good too in my opinion. I rarely use it, but when I do I'm always thrilled. I'd go for the 750x just for the headroom. And by the by , I can't tell any difference between pre-fender and after. Good luck!

also it is very similar to the Studio 220 because the preamp is almost the same

I'd stick with the old SM series over the X series if it were me.
