SWR Super Redhead w/ Goliath Jr. III or Son of Bertha

Sign in to disble this ad
I would like some opinions on which cab to mate my newlt acquired SWR Super Redhead with. I have to sell either my SWR Goliath Jr. III or my SWR Son of Bertha in order to finance the acquisition. The stack would be for outdoor gigs mainly. Indoor gigs would be the Super Redhead alone.

Please give me your opinions and your reasons why.

I have no experience with swr gear but i hear its good, and from a quick read on their site the 15" looks like it would pair nicer..just turn the horn off and give yourself a nice full range sound

Be sure to match your impedances.

The Suprer Redhead - how much does it put out? I had a 1st gen RH that was 240 into 4 ohms, if memory serves (and it was a weak 240 as well, if you follow...)

I have a pre-fender super, a goliath II 410, and an sob 115. I really like the 115 as an extension. Sounds full. Plus, the super is a little power-shy, and it sounds like it pushes the 115 a little more easily than a 410. I know you are asking about a goliath jr., and while I have not heard that combination before, I think the 115 has sounded good enough in the past to still suggest it.

You can only do so much with a 2x10 combo. I think most of us would need more - except for JimmyM of course!

So long as the impedance matches up, either one of those 2 cabs would make for a good ext cab, with the 210 being the "better" choice. If I remember correctly, it's 4 ohms to the internal, and 2 ohms minimum, so a 4 ohm ext cab.

SOB's are only 8 ohm if it's factory fresh, I had both of these set ups and the SOB was not getting enough juice to match the Redhead. The Jr cabs are better since they can be stacked perfectly under the Redhead unlike the SOB cabs (they stack slightly crooked, the corners don't match up) and you can get them in 4 ohms, unlike the SOB cabs. And even when you match the cabs ohms up with 4 ohm and 4 ohm you still don't get massive amounts of low end out of it. With the increased power that your giving it, you still have to extreme the eq settings on the Redhead to get it to thump just right. Redhead's to me work best all by themselves but if you need more power match them up with 210 + 210 and distribute the power evenly across every aspect of the set up. win win for me that way.

I have the same combo with an Ampeg 1x15 underneath. Sounds good by itself but thicker with the 15" - Especially with my 5 string and the bass knob pulled.

As already said, there's only so much thickness you can get from 10s.

Not true. Only so much thickness you can get from TWO tens...

When I was in the market for a new cab I had the option to buy one of those 2 on the cheap. I went with the Goliath Jr. III (which wound up being pre-Fender) and it is seriously the best 210 I've ever used.

That goes without saying

I stopped playing through 8 tens the second I got my Redhead and haven't looked back. Haven' hurt my back either.

Ben as much as I like the SOB cab I think I would also stay with the 10's. The 410's would be more even and also give you more speaker cones. I don't think you can go wrong...but the Goliath Jr is my favorite cab....don't get rid of that baby.

Used a Goliath Jr. with my SWR Silverado for several years. The 210s and the 212s worked together very well, and gave a powerful and rich tone for the larger or outside venues.
