SWR Triad Drivers

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been trying to find the performance specs of the drivers in my SWR Triad. It's the MKII version and when I contacted SWR, they kindly sent the part numbers and then pointed out there are none available in Europe.
It looks like either the 15" or the 10" driver has gone, but I could really do with being able to get some suitable, (Eminence?) replacements in the UK once I find out which it is and Neo's would save some weight. In fact changing the drivers to Neo's might save my back.
My simple mind says they must be 4 Ohm Drivers, as that is what the cab is rated at, so as there is a 3 way X-Over only 1 speaker, (or the horn), would be in use at any time. Now confusion kicks in, the horn is a Fostex 25H273, which is an 8 Ohm Horn and the L-Pad that controls it is 8Ohm as well.
So are the drivers 8 Ohm and something is going on in the X-Over?
It is my ideal 1 cab solution and love it to bits. Any ideas?

IIRC, the 15 and the 10 are both 8 ohms, with the 10 having a 100hz passive high pass that makes it essentially 4 ohms from 100hz on up (roughly). I think the 15 is run full range.

The impedance is probably closer to 8 ohms under 100hz.

The horn is actually crossed over at 5khz I believe.

so, the term '3-way xover' is kind of a misnomer here since there's no low pass on the 15.

The woofers in this cab are not all that heavy as I recall, it's mostly that the enclosure is made out of bricks.

Hmmm

are you looking to replace your drivers? Is one blown?

I used two Triads for several years... I ultimately decided they weren't what I wanted, but they are good cabs. I did find that I blew more than a few of those fuses that light the cab up when you really push them - - The fuses that are actually automotive interior lamps (!) that protect the tweeter...

Thanks for that and it makes a lot of sense. If they are both 8 Ohms that could make replacing them, (if I need to), a lot easier.

Not sure yet. I am getting some intermittent "Farting" and weird sounds out of it. I am going to take it apart tomorrow and check everything out and also check the weight of the drivers. It isn't that heavy, but would be awesome if I could shed a few pounds. I really like the sound of the Triad and did from the first time I used it so am keen to keep it going.
If it is a driver problem, I just wanted to get an idea of what the specs are so I can get a replacement and bolt it back together again.

I found a posting that I think you contributed to about this very issue, including a circuit diagram of the x-over and looks like you were spot on.

Anyway, dismantled the beast today and obviously someone has been meddling as there were joined/spliced/frayed wires and suspect joints. Everything re-soldered, ends made off properly and suspect wiring replaced. Problem solved.
Looks like the 15 and 10 driver have been replaced at some time as they are an Eminence Delta 15A and Alpha 10A. The 10 isn't that heavy but i could save some weight on the 15, particularly as I have a Kappalte 3015 sitting around from a project that didn't happen.
The horn, however is heavier that the drivers, so that may be the area to look at.
Thanks for the help.

I've seen a lot of haxxored Triads, and a lot of busted ones. The two go together. It really was a poor design.
