SWR Workingman's 210 vs. Golliath Opinions?

Sign in to disble this ad
I drove out into the dark night last night to pick up a Golliath II Jr 210 cab that someone was selling on CL about an hour from home. I got there and the cab looked pristine. It was clearly a pre Fender SWR cab and I was impressed right off the bat. I noted that there was no horn attenuator on the back and assumed this was an early model.

You can see where this is going! After a quick listen with the seller playing his bass through the cab, I snatched it up for $250 thinking this was a great deal. Got her home, sat her next to my Super Redhead and suddenly realized that this cab has a little black piezo tweeter instead of a silver Fostex horn and it clearly says "Workingman's 210T" on the front plate.

Why I missed this I will never know. I was tired and wanted to start the long drive home and I simply missed the fact that I was buying something totally different then what I went there for. The seller was young and inexperienced and I don't think he intentionally set out to rip me off.

So who has compared this cab to the Golliath Jr?
Did I pay too much?

I can say that so far it does not sound as good as the Red Head speakers which I believe is a Golliath Jr so of course I may be answering my own question.

I would not have bought this cab for the price had I been paying attention. But I have to say it's still a pre Fender SWR cab, fits under the Red Head perfectly, is clearly built with the exact same cabinet materials as the Red Head and it looks like its never been used. I am unsure if its worth it at this point to try and sell it off and continue to look for a proper matching cab for my amp.

Its not a bad sounding cabinet but I really wanted a 4 ohm Jr to pair up with the Red Head so that the cabs are evenly matched.

If it does what you need it to do, keep it. I still have and play my Goliath from 1990ish. Awesome cabs. I also have and play my SWR 6x10 Goliath cab. Can't say enough good about them.

If it was sold to you as a Goliath, and it's not, take it back, But in the future, pay closer attention to what you're buying. If this is to be an ext cab for the redhead, it will NOT be a good match, as the internal 4 ohm spkrs will get most of the power, drowning out the new 210.

Not sure if the seller actually knew that was not a Goliath cab. I certainly can't blame anyone but myself for not paying attention to exactly what I was buying. Despite this cab being a perfect match size and appearance wise to my Redhead, the mismatched ohms and overall less impressive tone have convinced me that I am going to have to sell it and keep my eyes open for a proper Goliath Jr. Just hope I don't take too much of a bath on it!

Gosh there are tons of them out there, should be no problem.

There was a guy on www.bassgear.com who had one for sale in Lake Tahoe.

PM me if you want I think I have his number.

Probably cost you $50 to ship it up there.

I've owned both. A couple of differences that stood out... 1. power handling and 2. warmth.

The WM didn't like alot of power and was not as loud with the same amount of power. The goliath was alot warmer and fuller sounding. The WM sounds good until you compare to the goliath series

Thanks, I think I will stay local as shipping to Canada is not cheap plus I need to sell this one first to recoup my losses.

I totally agree that the WM sounds good until its compared to the Redhead cab which is much warmer and rich sounding.
