Taking my LMII old school. What Cab for the job?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I got a Little Mark II because I did the way it can really sound old school and almost tubey with the filters settings on it. So my question is what cab can help accentuate that sound. (Think Willie Week on Donny Hathaway Live!)

Right now I got my eye out for an Aguilar DB115, DB112 or a Bag End 115 (no tweeter.)

Ideas????

2x12

Not saying your choices are not good but some 2x12's with the tweeter backed off sound old school with LMII. I played mine through Avatar neo 2x12 and thought it was the sound I remembered from the 60's. I had Fender amps and JBL D140f cab too before I quit to get serious about school and work:

You need clean bottom and clean low mids. I would not worry about the tweeter, just turn it off.

I have found that the Epifani UL210 S1 and the Epifani t210 NYC both sound about the same and added together have significantly MORE low-mid and low end booty than my Epifani UL410 S1 or my old Goliath II 410 + SOB 1x15 rig.

If don't think you want the sound of 2 JBL 140F fifteens in a Dual showman cab. That is not the hallowed old school studio tone, or WW with DH live--for that matter. IME, those old rigs produced farty mud, IMHO. I had that DS Fender rig (1966-1969) and suffered a lot.

How big a box you want?
I want small and am VERY happy with a TL606 cabinet - or any good 1x5 (with no or tweeter off)

A TL606 has to be built custom correct?

Ok so a Mesa 215 Deisel came up and I am really considering it.

Is the MLII going to be way underpowered for it?

I always threw way more watts than what the LMII puts out at my 215. But I know a guy who ran his 215 with a Hartke 3500. It sounded fine, just not ear melting loud.

there is no such thing as underpowering, unless you use a basson cab, which is a special needs cab with huge magnets that will cause speakers to burn out if you use less wattage than they recommend. but you could run that mesa cab with a b-15 and it would be fine.

As I understand it, this old EV design is very similar to both Mesa and Orange 1x15 cabs (probably about 60 lbs); can also be built by Low Down Sound (less than 50 lbs)

I ran a 2x15 boogie diesel with a GK700rbII which I think only had part of the 700 watts going to the cab (650?) and I never dialed the master volume anywhere near max and that cab vibrated the house. Hope you are a stout and sturdy lad though. I rolled mine on castors then tilted it into my wagon.

A few cabinet makers have these as almost a stock item. i've heard that the Eminence 3015 works quite well in that box though I've not tried it myself.

I lean on a more even sounding cab and just use my LMII's eq to get old school --usually going either for a Motown or a Stax/Atlantic R&B vibe. After over a year, I'm still favoring a Carvin LS-1503 for this.

A P strung with flats helps, but you can get there with a jazz + rounds, too.
