TB153 Breakdown

Last night my cab began to start very muffled. Half way thru the evening the cab quit on me. I was only getting sound from the tweeter. The mid and woofer are dead. I have only had this thing about 3 1/2 months and am looking for help.

Call them up tomorrow and tell them what happened.

What were the circumstances around the failure? (Amp, wattage, how loud were you playing [1], tone settings on the amp, tone settings on your bass if it's active, how big a room, mains support, etc., etc.)

Edit: Pull the jack plate and check for burned crossover components, toasted wiring, loose connectors, and so on. You'll need a good flashlight to see in there.

[1] Not what your volume pot was at, which is meaningless.

I had master turned up all the way with the gain at about 10:00. The other settings were between 10:00 and 2:00. The amp is a GK Fusion. I had P A support. It was an outdoor gig. I was using a Geddy Lee Jazz. The cab is th 8 ohm version.

It's the crossover. I 99% guarantee it. Just call Dave at Avatar and he will send you a new one. Crossovers can overheat from time to time and I'll bet that is what happened. It's a sucky inconvenience but Dave will get ya fixed up!

A good aftermarket project for this cab would be to design a new crossover for it. Chances are good the stock one is a wee bit on the underspecced side as far as big power.

Odd that you lost both the mid and woofer speakers. I could see losing one or the other if it was a speaker failure.

Sounds more like the crossover died.

Turning the master all the way up on a powerful head is kinda risky, IMO. Rarely do I ever go past half. Your settings are a bit on the extreme side.

I will take another look at the settings. I will try to bring the master down to 2:00. Thanks for the input.

If someone wanted to take on a crossover spec'd to deal with my Genz Streamliner 900, I know I would be interested.

Good news. Dave is a great guy, he’ll take care of you. I like a little more GAIN in my settings, which is why I put my master at noon and leave it, unless I start clipping my pre-amp, then I’ll bump up the MASTER just a touch a back down on the GAIN.
Listen for distortion and watch your bass knob when things get LOUD. If you’re having trouble hearing yourself at half-volume (with your powerful head), it’s likely because you need to re-adjust your EQ to cut through with more mids while backing off a bit on the BASS. This will ease up the load on your cab, keep your head running cooler and make the band sound better, quite frankly.

Methinks that maybe Dave needs to upgrade the components for this crossover...This is one of the reasons that GB was very specific and careful when sourcing the original fEARful crossovers, to make sure that the components could take the kind of power that the speakers would make plausible for users.

Its also the reason that when I built my 15/6 crossover I upgraded all components to the hardiest of parts.
