As I'm sure you've read on these threads, the pre on the amp works differently, so it's not just a matter of adding bass or treble or whatever. There are at least 2 ways to dial in some dirt right on the amp (gain and TubeDrive) so you should have been able to get a nice variety of sounds.
Sounding like a PA or being stuck on clean and clinical is not what I would use to describe my BG250 at all. But then again, I pretty much leave mine centered and do everything from the bass, and they sound like my basses. GK stuff always sounded like someone else's bass rig. Or my bass according to GK. Or some rehearsal studio backline that I'm forced to use. Don't care for that stuff whatsoever.
