rule 2: buy what YOU like the sound of, not what you're told on talkbass. there are more opinions on here than there are people.
rule 3: don't cheap out on the cab. don't have to get the best but you should definitely aim higher than the cheapo budget models.
rule 4: there is no rule 4.
rule 5: the bigger the cab, the better it will sound.

Knowing a lot about YOUR amp is much better than knowing a little about a lot of amps...
Your question is kind of ambiguous. What do want to know, specific questions beget knowledge faster than leaving the answering a of vague question to the crowd.

GO!!! | Read all of the threads here in the 'Amps' forum on TalkBass. It'll take a few weeks. There is a lot of wisdom mixed with asinine bulls*** but at least you'll be familiar with some of the arguments regarding speakers, cabs, tubes vs SS amps, tone/reliability/versatility of different brands, etc. |

| | | | I have a friend who spends a lot of time and money on his car. He swears he's improving the performance but to me it's just as noisy, uncomfortable and impractical as it's always been. It's much the same with bass gear - not many TB'ers seem completely happy with their gear in the long term - our eyes wander greedily over to the greener side of the fence. A psychologist could probably explain it. Still - it's good fun and hurts no-one so why not? There is a lot of really good advice and insight on this forum and a sprinkling of bo***ks - it's just up to you to work out which is which!
