Tecamp Bad Bull 900 Review
I wanted to write this review since most posts related to Tecamp are about the Pumas or Jags. Being Tecamp a fairly expensive and not so commercially known brand, to get the hands on a Bad Bull is very hard, I had the pleasure to try one out so here are my thoughts:
Right out of the box the Bad Bull has the looks to get your attention, when you plug the power in all its magic eyes and lights turn on, making you feel like you're going to hear something special. Using a High Output bass into the LO (-10 db) input and the EQ set flat and play the first notes. Nothing really special about it, maybe a little dissapointing after all the excitement. But I was wrong! Once I started playing arround with the extense options (and very responsive) that this all-tube EQ provides is when I found out what was I dealing with.
And that was all before trying out the Tube Compressor and the Power Tube.
The Compressor has a well developed way to control it, the Threshold and Ratio knobs allow you to be very speicific on which frequencies and at what level to pass through the compressor tube, which can do pretty much anything you want a compressor to do (lots of sustain can be achieved as well as a controlled attack for very fast stuff)
But the REAL MAGIC is at the Power Tube. Since this amp has a Class D power section, the magic of power tube amping (or even Class AB Mosfets if you wish to add those in the mix) is lost. So what Tecamp did with the Bad Bull is add a Tube right after the Gain/Power section. This allows your sound to feel like a tube power amp without all that extra weight and power consumption. The Power Tube can be swicthed on or off, it has a control to dial the amount of distortion/saturation on the tube, this allows you to add that extra growl to your tone and, like all other controls in this amp, is very fine and responsive.
All in all, I believe Teacmp has developed the most advanced amp I've ever played with. I've used amps that can "do many things" but none of them did anything really good. The Tecamp Bad Bull gives you the ability to tweak your tone any way you want to, it can handle anything you throw at it and it will always perform in fashion. Just be careful, this one is a beast, it has TONS of power and if not controlled, it can damage speakers (and ears) easily!!
