Both are excellent choices, and both capture a whole lot of what I like about Ampegs. I use a VT Deluxe with my Ampegs for distortion at low volumes all the time, even the tube amps. I don't have the PF500 but I have a Micro VR and it's amazing, and the PF500 is just a little more amazing than the Micro VR (SVT 7 Pro is king, though).

So pros and cons....

VT Pros:

--Cheaper
--Wider range of distorted sounds

VT Cons:

--Knobs are very sensitive and hard to adjust on the fly
--No power amp
--No DI, although it can be modded for one by Putnam Guitars - Custom guitars mods amps pedals effects speakers and it sounds excellent

PF500 Pros:

--Light
--Has a power amp
--Has a very versatile and easy to use EQ that sounds great set flat and even better once you tweak it a little
--Has a DI

PF500 Cons:

--Doesn't have as wide a range for distorted sounds as the VT...it'll do a nice mild grind, but not full on angry cranked tube distortion like the VT
--Cheap but still a couple hundy more than the VT

Obviously the cheapest way to get your feet wet is with the VT. But if you don't need all the distortion a VT can give you, and you prefer one-box solutions rather than carrying an amp and a pedal, the PF500 is the way to go.

VT for me. I set the mid and character to about 9:00 - 9:30, treble off, bass noon, drive 10:00 and that is *my* tone. If I need to cut thru more I'll bump up the 160hz on my amp.

I've gone thru alot of amps and nothing matches this tone for clean, full, round and warm. Though I bet the ampeg micro might get in the ballpark. The VT just gives me instant "fat".

hmmmm......thanks guys......I don't really use much distortion so I would tend to go with the PF500 but I just got my Tots from Duke today and using them with my LMII sounded fantastic and I haven't even plugged in my DHA and BB and my comp yet....I have a feeling I may not really need anything else but if I did, it would be the PF500 but then I haven't even heard it yet so I've got to stop GASIN'.......

The only thing I ever looked for in solid state amps was how close they came to nailing the sounds of Ampeg tube amps. 4 years ago, I bought an LMII because at that time, it was the closest to the Ampeg sound that I heard out of a solid state amp. It doesn't do any dirt, but I could sort of fake it if I got some string rattle going.

But now I think the Ampeg micros and the VT come closer to it, especially since they'll grind and the EQ's are more in line with copping those Ampeg tones, but I still give respect to the LMII for doing a fine job of it.

Nice thing about the VT Dlxe is that even though it's hard to adjust on the fly, you can pre-program 6 tones so the tweaking can happen well before the gig.
