TH500 or Tonehammer + poweramp?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey there,

I'm wondering which route to take here.
Do I save my pennies for the Tonehammer head or do I get the pedal and get a poweramp later?

I'd like a lighter, more portable rig than my SVT-CL but I also want a bit of flexibility. I like the thought of being able to plug the Tonehammer pedal into the return of the fx loop on the SVT and have crazy Aguilar/Ampeg hybrid goodness if I feel the need and I'm not sure if I could the same with the head or if it would be worth
it.

On one hand, for a gig all I'd need to take would be a power amp with a Tonehammer sitting on my pedal board, and on the other, the head would be lightweight and compact, but would probably be a bit less powerful and bit more expensive.

Kinda rambly but you know what I mean.

Thoughts?

I think it depends on what the user intends to use the preamp bits for. If you need the preamp without the power then the separate components looks attractive. If you never intend to use the preamp alone or you don't mind dragging around an unused power amp section then the head looks better. It's a toss up for me, but since I already own the Tone Hammer pedal I don't need to figure it out.............

My rig is a Carvin DCM poweramp driven by a TH pre. I like having the extra channel available for other things ( looper feeding to another speaker through DCM ).

I asked this question in the TH 500 thread and most people agreed it would be pretty similar ( i think the AGS is different on the TH500 but I don't use it ).

I have both the pedal and head... I've used the pedal to drive a power amp or just plug into a PA at gigs and it sounds great... But now that the head is here I use it more.

I guess I tend to use each for their intended purpose. The pedal does offer flexibility if you need more power sometime... If I had a bigger gig then I could take the pedal and plug into the house and not have to bring a rig, but you can do the same with the head.

It depends on what you're after... For portability, a 4 lb. head is more convenient than a big pedal and a power amp.

+1

I've got the pedal and love it. But I'm still jonesin for the head, and I suspect once I get one the pedal will collect dust and serve as backup.

The TH is a beastly sized pedal. I wouldn't be shocked if it weighed more than my MB500 did:P
