Are These Speakers Good for Bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an empty Avatar 210 cabinet with a tweeter. It used to house 2 8ohm 10s, so the crossover is set for a 4ohm speaker load. I recently came across a local ad for these speakers, and am wondering if they would be suitable for use with a bass rig of 500 watts? They aren't specifically built for bass, but from what I can see they seem like they would do the job (I would use this rig mostly for rehearsals and small venues).

seems a little high frequency wise, but perhaps if you stuck to 4 string you could be okay. (im not an expert in any way.)

Were you unhappy with the speakers that came with the cab? Mine came with Avatar's version of Eminence Deltalites, also a 4ohm cab, and I thought it sounded pretty good!

Just wondering,

Both original speakers ended up getting blown (one may have died earlier but somehow went unnoticed for a long time). It's been empty for a few months, and I came across these recently at $50 apiece.

Anything other than direct replacements or something else that's been modeled with that box, is a complete crapshoot. I'd do a bit more research, and download WinISD to help out.

You are going to have to measure your cabinet and the ports it has and plug them into a box design program like WinISD. That will tell you if the EV drivers are a suitable fit. I would think not however I could be wrong.

I'm more interested in whether these are suitable speakers for a bass amplifier, since they are a "Mid-bass woofer for three- and fourway system" and "Suitable for horn-loaded mid-range devices". I could always bring my cab over and pop them in to hear with my own ears how they actually sound in it.

The resonance (at 60 hz) is marginally high for a bass guitar, but more important is that the Qts ("damping factor") is extremely low. This will result in very weak bass response in your Avatar cabinet.

Qts isn't damping factor, but you are correct that a Qts of less than .3 results in weak bass response. Qts of .15 along with Fs of 60Hz makes this driver unsuitable for electric bass.
