Thinking of getting a tube amp, need help.

Sign in to disble this ad
Im looking into going tube as my second amp. I dont have much money so the choices I have seen used are limited, (PeaveyVB-2, Traynor YBA200, and Eden 300T)
First off I loved the sound of the Traynor but felt it wasnt "loud" enough, Never tried the Peavey, and the eden was just blah.
Are the Peavey VB-2 good amps?
Are there any others that are out there in the same price range used that I might not have heard of?
Im looking to run it into 2 2x10 cabs in a rock band enviroment.

I have a vb-2 and I love it. Definitely worth the 900, or cheaper if you pick up one used like I did.

Depending on budget you can get a great Mesa 400+ or maybe an MTI era Ampeg SVT on the used market for under a grand pretty safely. These will have the power you need but you'll be far shy of the $1500 plus you see the big/high end tube amps go for. I'd recommend an SVT of some sort. I'm sure the links Stumbo posted contain all sorts of info on all the various options.

Good luck with the hunt!

I play the Eden through an 'older' Carvin 4x10. I like old-school thump-y bass tones and find that with the tone controls all at noon-ish positions on the dial the tones are VERY trebley. I dial it out and jam on. For what it's worth, the horn on the cab is completely dialed out, and I use a neck position humbucker on a maple, modded (before I got it) 80s Rick 4001. The only place I've EVER needed reinforcement was a crazy joint we play with a 90 degree bend in it, and the rig had the juice, it just would have totally wrecked the stage volume situation.

Happy Hunting
