Thinking of making the switch

Seriously considering making the move from 10" drivers to 12".......experiences?

Anybody else do this?

B-string 03-05-2013 09:44 PM

I moved from 15's to 12's no regrets!

IPYF 03-05-2013 09:53 PM

I'd also like to do this and I think I will after my mid year break. I'd be coming off 10s. I'm thinking TCs or a Barefaced if I can fund it.

You will hear a thunderous amount of lows and mids (depending on the cab and number of speakers) and yet you'll still hear plenty of highs as well. I went from 1x15+4x10 to 2x12 and could not believe how well they sounded. I no longer have any 10's and only one 15. Still have one 2x12 and two different 1x12's. :) I love 'em.

i use two 1 12 cabs; they are awesome.
great deep lows , clear highs and 2 is more than enough oomph for my band.
perfection.

should be a tad more specific..lol

thinking of moving from 2 4x10's to 2 2x12's

JimmyM 03-05-2013 11:51 PM

It'll move a little less air, but should be plenty for most unless they play in doom bands.

Jbassrockboy 03-05-2013 11:54 PM

Yep I like 12's

Snakeman1066 03-05-2013 11:55 PM

Lol and Jimmy you know darn good and well I play in a stoner doom band...

So I'm guessing that you are being facetious....

Just kinda tired of lugging my big cabs around

basscooker 03-05-2013 11:59 PM

make sure they're GOOD 2x12's. if you have a really great pair of 4x10's, a so-so pair of 2x12's will leave you very disappointed. you'll want to be sure to check them out at volume to be sure they're for you. y'know there's alot to be said about driver sizes not being as important as it used to be, i'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned. but good luck and we want pics of the new rig.

Well you'll never get anywhere with that attitude!

:D

Nah, actually, most 412 rigs aren't quiet, so you'll likely be just fine anyway.

Jim Carr 03-06-2013 01:39 AM

I do 410, 610, 210, and 15/6/1 and have long ago done 112, 115, 118, 212, 215, 412, 415, and 812. I don't find the driver size means much. Really.

RickenBoogie 03-06-2013 08:17 AM

+1 you can't judge a cab by driver size alone. All depends on "which" 12, and "which" 10.

Lo-E 03-06-2013 08:23 AM

RickenBoogie is totally right. It really depends more upon the cab design than the driver size. The surface area will, of course, determine how much air you can move, but the efficiency and voicing of the cabs is all up to the design and, as basscooker points out, there are good and bad designs out there for almost every driver configuration.

+1 to this (& rickenboogie).

Driver size isn't so relevant. It's frequency response, sensitivity/efficiency (SPL), & displacement/potential air movement (speaker surface area multiplied by Xmax). And yes, absolutely, the box designed around the speaker(s).

Great 10s, 12s, & 15s (6s, 8s, & 18s, too, for that matter) available. Not-so-great ones available, too.
