Thinking of some new 1x15"s, check out these Mojotones

I love the sound of 15's, I'm currently using an Ashdown ABM115C, which is perfect for me with it's big, creamy low end and nice vintage sounding breakup that just makes my bass sing.

But I'd like a pair of matching 1x15's with Celestion BL15-400X's (Green label). Disclaimer: NO I DON'T WANT THE ORANGE LABEL SPEAKERS. And no I don't want Eminence Pro Audio speakers. I'm not a hi fi cheeser. I play rock, not cd's. If you recommend pro audio speakers I will ridicule you and your poor reading comprehension/weak tone.

So I'm looking at these Mojotone Bass Cabs:

I think they look great, and they seem to have everything I need, and even though it's not a factor, the price is definitely right. My question is, are they too good to be true? Would I be better off saving up for some custom Emperor cabs? What do you think?

No recommended drivers for that unloaded cabinet? No spec of the depth of the ports? Nah.

I'm not worried about recommended drivers, but do you happen to know precisely how the depth of the ports affects the sound of the cabinet? I would be inclined to think that the 4 1/2" spec is the important one.

Unfortunately there's not one important spec, but a series of them. The Port depth is integral to the tuning of the cabinet, similar it internal volume. Its going to effect the low end of the cab...

The Orange 115's are over sixty pounds loaded, so that's about right, even though my Ashdown is about 46 loaded I believe.

And yes I understand the importance of a string of specs. I'm not worried about what the cab is tuned to because I'd just as soon play through a sealed cab or (GASP!) a detuned cab. And yes I know bands that play detuned cabs and they do so at extreme volumes and no the speakers don't blow.

What I'm primarily concerned with is that the volume of the cab is a bit lower than the Vas for the speaker I've picked out. And yes as we know that affects low end. Think of the air pressure inside the cabinet, behind the speaker, and how the volume of air behind that speaker changes how freely the speaker is to move. Nevermind barometer, altitude, temperature, etc. Add in ports with air flowing through them and that speaker is more free to move, improving low end.

It is complex. But my recipe for tone is not. I am picky about tone, but I'm not Eric Johnson.

Thanks for the comments though guys! So should I make a poll: Mojotone cabs or should I save up for Emperor cabs, no one has answered that question yet and that's what I'd really like to know.

It sounds like you might like the old Electro Voice TL606. Search around here for plans and build em. They're awesome.

I'll throw in an audio sample to show about the tone I'm building. I already have a head that nails this sound, and I'm not looking for anything too different from the cab I'm already using which can do this sound.

Black Sally by the New Zealand band The Human Instinct:

So I would prefer buying something new as opposed to building something, though my tech would probably love building some cabs for me. From what I could find about the Electro Voice TL606, it seems that the Orange OBC115 is based on it.

I would love to get the Orange cabs as my favorite local music store is an Orange dealer and I like to support that store whenever possible, but if what I've read is correct:

http://www.humbuckermusic.com/or15bacabob.html

they come stock with an Eminence Kappa. Anyone have any idea how that cab would fare with the Celestion thrown in there?

I always thought those Orange cabs were Celestion loaded, so check it out with Orange.

Yeah, and they're 400 watts so I'd assumed they came with that speaker that I'm looking at. I will look into it.

The Oranges are loaded with Kappas.

They're also fantastic. Mark, I know you and I are in the same zip code as far as tonal goals, and I'd highly suggest 'em. I know I plan on calling it a day (rig wise) with a pair of them under a 100+/-watt tub head, and I suspect you'd feel the same way.

Yup I bet I would. I'll still have to try the Celestions in them, but I have no doubt in my mind that they're great cabs. Now I just need to decide what to buy next, another tube head or those cabs! Choices choices, my life is so hard!

Recommended speaker: Celestion Truvox TF1520

Port Tube Depth: 6"

I guess that answers some questions.
