Question Those kick boxes in autos

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey every one. I have a couple nephews that had those giant boxes in the trunk of the car. They have left them sitting, and I was curious as to the possibility of modifying them into bass cabs? Maybe the speakers could be used in another cab if not. Also they have those auto amps could these be cheaply modded to power bass cabs? I hate to see good stuff sit and rust away.

Short answer yes, good answer no. Car subs are meant for low low frequency for the majority of the time so the speakers are different then full range bass speakers. They are meant to push a lot of air very short distance so it would sound really muddy and undefined.

Tried it. They sound like crap.

The speakers in those car subs are cheap stuff, and are not capable of reproducing music with any quality. They're only made to go "boom" with no fidelity at all.

Too bad... I think they have out grown pulling up in the driveway shaking the windows. What about the amps think you could modifty those? Come on they have taken enough of my things. I need some pay back here. I was expecting to here something like maybe if you add crossovers and tweeters. But I shurely don't have time or cash to waste on them.
man this is a messd up smile face.
thank you all for your answers.

Modifying car amps for home/instrument use will surely prove to be a waste of time and money. It can be done, but you're still going to have an inferior amp for instrument use.

And sorry Bill...I'll leave room for you next time in about a week

And I'm pretty sure the bass in "Cars" is keyboard.

The amps might be able to be rigged to run a portable bass rig off a battery, like for going camping or taking to the park or something IF you can defeat the crossover. Or use the high outs to another car amp to run, well, highs. Who knows how long the battery would last.

As far as the speakers and cabs, the best thing you could do with them is sell them to some other kid who wants a $3000 stereo system in their $300 car.

Unles You're planning to run on battery power for one reason or another, the amps are a lost cause as MI amps as well.

Sure, it's been a while since the last time the question You ask was made into a thread, but believe me, it's a popular one. Most of the older tinkerers (including me) have tried it one time, with less than stellar results.
