Thoughts on this Warwick/GK deal?

Sign in to disble this ad
Found a guy on CL selling a Warwick ProFet 5.2 500 Watt head to go along with a GK Backline 410BLX 4X10 cabinet. I've been looking to upgrade my amp -- since I'm an upright guy, recently converted to electric, who has been playing on a cheap SWR's Workingman combo for way too long -- and the price seems pretty reasonable ($350).

I play on a 1979 Peavey T-40 if that helps. The cover band that I jam in plays mostly classic rock, and I occassionally sit in with a local blues band, too. Neither band ever plays to an audience of more than a few hundred (think local bar scene), so I need it to be decently loud but not thunderous.

Any advice on either piece (or what they'd sound like together) would be great!

Sounds reasonable price wise. I would say the head is close to worth that alone.

If the cab doesn't produce a sound you want sell it and get something better and basically have a free item to trade in on something else or resell. That should be plenty for a bar gig.

Yeah, I definitely thought it sounded reasonable, too. I don't know much about Warwick heads (or really, about any of this stuff, to be honest), but my quick Google search made it seem like the head itself was valued about the same as this asking price.

It's a bit of a drive to get to it, so I wanted to make sure it was worth my time to at least go test it out.

It'll likely be worth it. Just make sure that everything works on it, no weird sounds, etc. I jump on what seem like excellent deals but there have been a few times that I got careless and got what I paid for.

i'm using a profet 5.2 right now, because my wt550 is in repair. i'm playing it through eden's 210XLT and 210XST. for my taste the profet 5.2 is too bright with to less low end, the eq section is not really sensitive and it gets really noisy with high master volume. anyway for 350$ including the cap you got a good deal with it, i guess.

Anybody else had any negative experiences with the 5.2? Knurrr has cast a bit of doubt into my decision here...

Go and try it for yourself. We're all extreme biased with a massive variation in tastes. Don't let 1 or 50 naysayers convince you that something isn't right for you. You need to find out for yourself because there is no substitute for first-hand experience.

Go to the Warwick forum http://forum.warwick.de. They will have way more info for you. I have no experience otherwise I would chime in. The Backline series is a lowend and is probably more of a concern IMO. I've heard a lot of bad about those. It sounds like a decent deal and I'm sure you can get it for $300.

Go for it. I'd have loads of fun with that rig.

problem is i'm comparing a wt550 with a profet 5.2. if i wasn't that biased my critics would be less. the only thing that really bugs me is the noise at higher volumes.

edit: sorry, but i informed you wrong. the profet5.2 is not noisy at high volumes! the reason was the defect groundlift of the di-box i used. now i'd say go and get it! did you?
