Thunderfunk 750a vs Aguilar DB750

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a DB750 now which I really like but wondered how the TF 750 might compare?

I'm very taken by the much lower weight advantage!

Apologies if this has been covered before (I did try searching but mostly came up with TF 550 vs Ag 500 comparisons).

TF has a much more power EQ
DB has pretty much just ONE, but very good tone

Totally different animal ...

FWIW, the TF cannot replace the DB if that's what you are after.

I agree, they are very different beasts. I have played an AMP (pre-Thunderfunk by Dave Funk) and owned the DB750. I would love to have the DB back.

Thanks guys,

I may just have to try one of these - unfortunately they are very rare over here in the UK

FWIW, I have owned two DB750's prior to buying a TF750A...

Last week, I just sold the Thunderfunk to buy a DB751. The TF is lighter, to be sure (at least 50% less weight), but it didn't have that girthy bottom end and smooth top end I really have come to like on the Aggys.

Not much to report beyond the frequent cry of "only one tone, but it is a great one" for the Aggy, but that's how it worked for me. They are relatively different amps and if I could keep them both, I'd have them both, but if just one? Then the DB750/751... IMO, YMMV...

Best,

Mike

I live nowhere near any sort of bass or amp builder of note

However, I do live less than 10 minutes walk from a lovely little micro-brewery that sells direct to the public

As I started this thread I think it's Ok for me to continue on the off topic stuff

This is my little local brewery: http://www.lovibonds.co.uk/

Henley had a great brewing tradition for many years but our main brewery, Brakspears was sold a good few years ago. We still have a lot of pubs in the town (I think about 25 within 15 minutes walk & it really isn;t a very big town) but we've missed having our own local beer for a while.

Good to have someone back again - and they have a 'traditional" IPA that comes in at 6.9% too!!

I sure miss the pubs in England that we used to frequent, I don't travel like I used to.

I did do a TFB550 vs DB750 extensive bass test once. In general, I found the 750 to be nice, but not quite my tone. I can see it do amazing things in R&B, but not so much in rock, IMO. However, the TFB was just as warm, yet agressive, but nothing unpleasant about it. I am 95% happy with my Markbass gear, and the weight and ease to carry is amazing, but I do sometimes think of getting a Thunderfunk.

I'd love to try a TF 750. I own a TF 550 right now and love it. I did own a DB 750 too. But I have heard that the TF 750 is a little wider in the low end, and loses some of the punchiness that is such a signature of the TF 550. I personally like the sound of the 550 over my old Aggie, the aggie sounded GREAT at low volumes, but I had a tough time controlling the low end in bigger rooms. I have heard that if you re tube the Aggie with NOS Telefunkens (about a $350 up-charge) it really tightens up the low end.

But I couldn't get with the weight of the Aggie (it feels much heavier then it's listed 42 pounds). When I shipped mine out the shipping weight with a three space SKB rack was 78 pounds! That along with the low end boominess is what moved me into the TF. I am more than satisfied. If I hit the lotto, I might consider one of the new micro heads for backup but the TF would still be my go to gigging head.

Have owned the TF750,550 and DB750....I think the DB750 and the TF550 are the two better heads...The TF550 didnt get great low end but was really punchy, the TF750 had more low end but didnt have the PUNCH like the 550....So will probably settle for DB750 and the TF550.

TF750

Had the 550, never tried the Aguilar (but don't like the loss of low end control from tubes), just got the TFB750 and I can't imagine being happier with an amp. There is no perfect solution, but if you factor in cost, weight, sound and range of tones, there is no better answer, particularly if (as I do) you want to drive 2 ohms. Also, any amp is only as good as the matchup with speakers and the TRB750 is an amazing fit with my two 4-ohm Acme Flatwounds.

FWIW, I have read extensively here at TB that the Aguilar TH500, while not quite a direct sonic equivalent to the DB750/751, comes very close in many respects. It weighs about 5lbs and costs quite a bit less as well. Might be (again, just a suggestion) worth checking out?
