Thunderfunk TFB-800B2 with a fEARful cabinet ???
It seems that Thunderfunk and fEARful are like two ships crossing in the night. Is anybody using a Thunderfunk bass head (any model for now) with a fEARful cabinet or cabinets at a 4 ohm load total ? I'm concerned about whether or not the TFB-800B2 will adequately power my fEARful 1515/66 cabinet which is 4 ohms. And I mean really power this cab to move some air. The TFB-800B2 puts out 630 watts rms @ 4 ohms. I need to know if this amp would run out of clean power.
FYI: I've been bridging a P.A. amp into my fEARful 1515/66 for 2000 watts at 4 ohms with an external variable high pass filter. It's a good power match with no problems. But I'm trying to get out of the component system and into a very high quality bass head like the TFB-800B2.
I've been using a Thunderfunk TFB-420 along with a 12/6 for a couple of years. Thunderfunk + fearful is a very good pairing. Keep in mind, there's some compression on tap in a Thunderfunk.
A little compression changes the Watt needs pretty dramatically, but going from 2,000 Watts to 600ish needs some live testing to know if it floats your boat. Not everybody likes compression, plus, the Watts you need may not be anywhere near what you have on tap now. Frankly, if your rig works, my first thought is don't mess with it.
My own context is very different - I play a mix of blues and jazz at levels to match a normal un mic'd drummer. I like a bit of compression even at those levels - helps make a round tone that fits in a mix nicely. The pairing has amazingly usable eq - I can smash even the most difficult room into submission quickly.
Seems like the Thunderfunk TFB-800b2 and fEARful are like two ships crossing in the night. In recent years I don't even play very loud. I use quite a bit of lows for my Reggae tone. In some ways I'm loud but not at all like I used to be when I played bass against super loud guitar players long ago. My Carvin amp probably allows me headroom-don't know if I tap into it. I've got 2 different 4 ohm fEARful stacks: 12/6cube with a 12sub and then a 1515/66. The 12 stack draws far less power than the 66 which is sort of a bottomless pit. I don't know if there is a return option for a TFunk amp.
I've actually tried out a TFB-750a with my 12 stack and it sounded great - I mean really great. I imagine that the 800 would be just as great. But I really need to try it out with my 66 - the bottomless pit. I'm just fishing for more user feedback between these two giants. Thanks for your feedback.
