Tilting Cab, What to do with Amp?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, maybe a dumb question but I wanted to get some feedback...

My band has been playing alot of smaller places recently which means that only the vocals and keys are going through the PA. So my rig is supplying the bass. Ive been having an issue with hearing myself vs being too loud and figured I would try tilting the cab to see if that helps any.

I just bought an Ampwedge and should be here in a couple of days. I have an Ampeg SVT410HLF for the cab and a Markbass LMII for the amp.

Ok, here is the dumb question...

For those of you that tilt your cabs, what do you do with your amps? Im talking about separate amps not combos obviously. I guess I could strap it down or something but wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions.

Thanks
John

With my RH450 I usually just hook the small feet over the top edge of the cabinet. Often I'll also place an anti skid matte under the head also just to ensure that it doesn't move.

LMII? If you don't wanna use a big hunk of bubble gum, take a long bungy strap from the left handle across the top to the right handle.

Add a couple of thick rubber feet to the rear of the cab top, to act as stops to keep the amp from sliding off.

I have a car mat on top of my cabinets. It's got grippers built into the bottom to grab the carpet covering on the cabinets, and it's dense enough to keep the rubber feet on my Eden WT-400 (not in a rack) from sliding around.

An alternative to bungee cords is to get some long double-sided hook-and-loop material (like VelcroŽ). You can find it in hardware or home-improvement stores in a long ribbon. Just use that to strap the head down. If you have carpet covered cabinets, it'll lock onto the carpet. If not, just run it around the whole cabinet. Might look a lot prettier than bungee cords.

Or, use gaff tape!!

Duct tape. OK, for a neater solution, fuzzy piece of velcro on the top of the cab, hook piece of velcro on the bottom of the LMII. Or get an old 50 lb Peavey and you won't have to worry about it.

Or just place the amp on the floor under the stand, unless you need to do a lot of tweaking?

I was kind of thinking about something like this. The Ampeg cab has the holes on top to line up with Ampeg heads. And I know that the LMII is light but after experimenting a little at home, a wad of gum wont do the trick Damn thing vibrates right off!

Good ideas so far, thanks for the feeback.

Yes, that is my last resort. I dont tweak at all during the gig so it would be ok. Or, maybe build something simple at an angle that goes with the amount of tilt but the top is flat so the amp can sit on top...hmmmm....

Or, how bout this...get another Ampwedge, flip it upside down and put it on the cab but also add the rubber feet "stops" so it doesnt move? Huh? Huh?

Ahh...seemed like a good idea =)

If you buy the MB bag for the head, it comes with the velcro straps to sabilize the amp on the cab. The head does'nt have to be removed from the bag.

Depending on the amount of tilt you get, it might just hang out. Does the LMII have rubber feet? You could get them cheap enough, a bit of resistance from slipping. Or a small 2 or 3" inch strip of velcro at the back of the LMII to coincide w/ one on the amp so it sits nicely? A small enough piece so that it comes up easily - wouldn't need much to hold that LMII in place being that they are so light.

Here's what I do with my LMII: nothing

I have a stained, oak plywood, TL606 cabinet
The 2"x2"x8" block of foam fits in the port snugly for transport and the amp when mounted on a tilted cab, stays put; give it a try before any modifications as I didn't think it would work either and it has through many gigs.

Im going to try it out this Saturday at our a gig and see. I do have the Markbass bag for the amp I got recently and even though I have been leaving the amp in while gigging i have no problem taking it out. So I am going to take a bungee cord (a yellow-orange color no less that matches MB stuff) just in case. Ill try it out and report back. Thanks again for all the input!

I have a Little Mark Tube and the official MarkBass small bag, but there's no velcro on it that I can see.

I agree that the head can stay in the bag (with the back and front unzipped, of course).

I usually set my cab on a chair, with the head on top. (Don't try this with a full-size refrigerator, or 2 by 15".)

On my F1 bag, if you fold the back flap over, there is a strip of velcro that can be attached to the cab. Of course, if you have ratfur, it's easy; if not, you would have to attach a piece to the cab top.

Why is there such an obsession to always have the amp or rack on top of the cab? Mine works fine in any position!
