Tonal description of Ampeg/Orange/Ashdown heads

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey,

I've been considering purchase of an new head, and following that some cabs. At the moment I've noticed the following three are in around the same price range and seem like they would suit my needs.

Ampeg SVT-3 pro
Ashdown AMB-900 evoIII
Orange bass terror 500/1000

If anyone who's tried these could describe roughly the differences in tone between the three?

I was initially drawn towards the ampeg since so many bands seem to use that particular head, and I suppose I am a fan of the ampeg sound in general based on that.

I play all sorts of styles, but I suppose I'd say I want plenty of grit/bite, but with clarity and punch also.

Also any other suggestions for heads I might like to take a look at?

For what you're saying you want, I would say the orange bass terror would be the best. I'm looking at getting one right now too. The SVT 3 sounds kind of muddy to me. The terror bass gets into the same kind of gritty svt tone that you want, but stays crisp and clear.
