Tone change from converting 7189A amp to 7189 tubes?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I've bought another Magnatone 441A Bass amp, this makes 2 that I'll own. I just love the way these little 18 watt tube amps sound. Miked they sound absolutely HUGE! But finding and paying for the 7189A power tubes is getting expensive & more and more difficult.

Has anyone converted an amp from the 7189A to the regular 7189 tubes? What did it do to the tone of the amp? The plate voltage is a little lower 400 vs 440 and the regular 7189 and the 7189A uses the 1 pin and 9 pin I believe, where the 7189 doesn't. If the tone is still pretty much the same I'd love to be able to buy power tubes for $10 vs. the $40 to 60 each for the "A's"

So, has anyone done this?
