Trace Elliot cutting out
I've got a Trace Elliot GP7-SM 150W combo, which has an intermittent problem that is driving me mad!
It occasionally cuts out with an audible 'thump'. This can be after 5 mins of playing, or a couple of hours. When it happens, the DI output still works (it is used in a church band and DI'd to the desk), but the speaker does not work. It often comes on again after a few minutes, but can then cut out again without warning.
I've had it looked at by a good tech and he couldn't find any fault. He charged me £75 but the fault remains.
Have you tried an instrument cable to jumper between effects send and effects return?
I haven't got the circuit diagram to hand, and I haven't looked at it for several years, but as I recall there is a relay in the power supply that feeds the power amp..a relay dropping out would cause the thump.
The 18v (???) supply for the pre-amp is tapped off the transformer seperately, maybe why the DI still works
Might be worth checking the relay out?
Having taken a look at the service manual, it appears that the speaker is connected directly to the output stage without a relay between. I had thought that your description sounds like a thermal shutdown but I could not see any thermal breaker. I feel that if jumping the send and return does not help it needs to go back to the tech. He has already charged you 75 quid so he owes you something.
Thanks for the replies. I'll try jumping the send/return to see if that helps.
Does it have a switch on the front to bring the power amp online?
MIne is a GP12SMX, from the same era. My effect loop is parallel, with a blend knob on the front panel. This wouldn't cause such a cut out.
