So I was at band practice last night and we played 1 or 2 songs. I switched my amp on standby and came back to it about 10 minutes later and it was just off. I tried everything and couldn't get it to power back up... different outlet, different power chord, etc. I looked inside and nothing was visibly burnt, but considering the amp hadn't been used for about 15-20 minutes by this point it was pretty hot.

Obviously I will have to bring it to a tech for repairs, but does anybody have any ideas what it could be, or how much it could cost to repair?

Did you check your fuses?

A power surge could have popped a fuse... it can happen, especially if you're not using a power conditioner of any kind.

If it turns out to be something bad, I HIGHLY recommend these guys:

British Audio Service, Inc.

Shane and crew are frikkin' AWESOME... I just had to send in my TE AH300SMX and they made what could have been a painful experience a LOT easier on me.

My head works better now than it ever has... and the price was very fair.

I could be very very wrong, but I don't think I have a fuse, or if I do it's not easily changed like on a tube amp. That was my first instinct, to check the fuse, but I couldn't locate it. It's a solid state power section.

I'll check those guys out, but I happen to live in close proximity to Andy Fuchs, as in Fuchs Amplifiers, so I'll probably have him check it out.

Noooooo! I'd never trust a guy who Fuchs about with amps
Couldn't resist.

You're lucky to have a real amp man sleeping in your back garden.

There will be a fuse in there somewhere. If you look without breaking you might save some dosh.

back garden = nearby
look without breaking = be careful with your screwdriver
dosh = moolah, spondoolies, folding, coin...

Upper end of English row houses have both a front garden and a back garden but shared walls in between. Your back garden is thus slang for your own area, which can be relative. The wilds of the South Island of NZ is my "back garden" if we are both adventurers and you live in the North Island.

I'm gonna take another look for a fuse before taking it in... I've changed fuses on Marshalls/Fenders before, but never on a solid state head, anybody know where it might be? It's definitely not external, and I didn't see it inside when I looked.

Follow the mains power input is about all I can advise. Could also be a speaker output fuse.

Years ago as a young'n I took a power amp in to a CB radio etc general repair shop. He said it was stuffed. I sent it away to a sound hire / amp fixit outfit and they popped a new fuse in. So yeah, it might not be obvious but it's in there somewhere.

I had a pair of these amp heads, both worked great at band practice. Took both heads on our 2 week tour. In retrospect, it's stupid to take two of the same amps.....mostly because they could suffer from the same problems. Which mine did.

The first gig, the EXACT same thing happened to me.
Ran it for 10-15 mins.......stone cold died. Power still on, fan still running. I shut it down, checked all of my cords and what-not.
Turned it back on and it worked fine......for another 10 mins.
Died again.
At that point, I just borrowed a different head to finish the show.

My thought was that one was weird.

Next night I used the other.....it was a smaller place, so I wasn't as loud. Worked fine the entire show.

Next night, 10 mins and dead. Didn't even mess with it. Switched to the other bass player's head and finished the show.

It's almost like a protection circuit thing?

The amp wasn't hot, and I never ran it over 1/2 way on the volume.......actually, I never really pushed it that hard at all?

There are no fuses, I've looked.

I'm at a loss too. I'm going to contact British Audio Service right now and see what they say.

I contacted BAS, and they want me to ship the amp to them for repair.

@ $85 an hour.....I'm not sure what I'll do.
dud amp sitting in my basement, or functioning amplifier and less cash?

After shipping and a couple hours of service....the value of the amp has been surpassed.

Had one of these for a while. Great tone. But, it went down on me as well. Turned out the power supply section inside the head was fried and needed to be rebuilt. Had a local tech take care of it.
