Unless you need the more complex eq I wouldn't consider that an upgrade. The 1001 is a real solid head. And has more power than most of us will ever need.

It's an upgrade to those who think it is, and the opposite is also true to those who think that way instead. Personally, I think Trace has had a lot of good stuff in the past and there is definitely room for more in that vein. Choice, good.

Note, people who present a new something or other as subject matter ought to actually take the trouble to provide at least a link. Not every neighborhood has google yet ; }

Just IMO. I like Trace's product but personally like the 1001 a lot.

I'm another GK 1001 rb fan. Yeah, it could have more bells, whistles and lights, but the thing has been rock solid for years. I have yet to push it to the limit.

Greenboy was too modest to suggest this, but unless you have your GK parked on top of a fEarful cab, haven't heard everything it will do for you. I'd suggest a 15/6/1. With a tweeter you can run off the GK's biamp circuit, you can fully exploit the GK's potential.

When I hooked up the fEarful for the first time, it was like getting a new amp. There are lows you haven't felt and highs out the wazzo. It's all in there, and the more you push it the better it sounds. I'm not saying its perfect, it could be warmer at low volume, but there a pedals that will fix that.

You don't really say what you think the Trace is going to do that the GK doesn't.

I'd be looking at cabs.

As always: IMO, YMMV and all that.

I have been using a GK 1001RB-II for 8 years. It sounds great and I have never had a problem with it. I wouldn't consider a Trace Elliot an upgrade.

Upgrade? Well I cant say this for GK cabs, but my 1001RB head has played over 1000 shows and has NEVER let me down. Its always been a trooper and always sounds great! My SVT3PRO sounds great but lacks the headroom PUNCH I get with my 1001RB. Ive bought and sold countless gear, my 1001RB has always stayed my #1 head. Just my .10

Ive never played a Trace so I cant comment there.

At one point I had an MGB and a Triumph TR-650. I walked a lot. Traded them both on a Toyota.

Thanks for the reply’s guys

I agree with most of the comments above, the GK100rb is a great head. I tried a TE a few years back and it seemed to have a bigger, warmer & punchier sound without being louder.

Hi,

I had an older model Trace Ah 600-12 a few years back - I have to say, it definitely was warmer, but more than that it was MUDDY. Without using the 'Signature Trace Circuitry' setting (or whatever it is...) it was very muddy - then when using the Trace setting, it was way too scooped and transparent.
I have always been happy with GK gear - since selling the Trace, I have used a 700rbII, a 2001rbII and an '86 800rb (my FAVOURITE).
By all means, if the Trace is for you, go with it! But my opinion of the AH-600 12 is that it's too muddy/too scooped and not loud enough to get a distinct bass character across.

Thanks! JOHN

My thoughts exactly. That's more head than 99% of the folks on TB "need".... What exactly are you hoping to improve by purchasing this "Trace Elliot" head?

Hmmmm...

As a former '72 MGB servant, I normally would agree... but my Ashdown has been *nails* for 11 years now. Not a glitch, and it has been used and abused.

What *I'd* like to know is Just how "Trace "Elliot" is the new Trace Elliot?? You know, like Sunn / Acoustic / etc...etc... A name doesn't mean much without a real company behind it.

I have a 1001 RB-II and wouldn't trade it for the world. Well, maybe the world, but nothing less. I'm biamped, I mean biased. I LOVE my rig. When I'm playing, I feel like I'm at the top of the food chain.

I have a Brit Trace 600 watt, 12 band, 210 w/horn combo...awesome for upright bass...got high and low compression, which I use...never have liked onboard compression til this amp...they're pretty darn good for upright at small gigs...for the life of me, I can't seem to make it work for electric bass...doesn't seem to do what I'm after there...oh yeah, it's HEAVY...like 97lbs for a small 210 combo...to me that seems heavy...Trace have their fans for sure...I've owned 2 different ones...again only use them for upright...the 1001 is awesome for upright bass AND electric bass for me...great, classic amp, for sure.
