Trade in Amp at GC?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have two bass combos that I don't use. I don't want to ship them, so eBay won't work for me.

Has anyone traded in an amp at Guitar Center? Would I be able to get 50% of the current street price?

I think it is 40% of the used price. It's not a very good deal.

Yea ime they always give you a pretty bad deal. Just sell them on craigslist, because although it might take a month or two to sell, you'll end up getting like twice the amount guitar center will give you.

GC usually gives you 50% of what a decent example of the same product is going for on ebay.

It depends who you deal with. Goto the gc in glen burnie. The manager there knows his stuff and gave me real nice trade in values for what j had. I got more for a bass there than what it goes for here on tb. Same with my acoustic. They gave me $1300 for my cirrus and sold it for $1500 the next day. Custom shop cirrus of course.
It all depends who you talk to. If you live close to college park md I would stop by atomic music because they pay pretty well for gear

If you want to buy something at GC they will give you a better deal, but used gear for cash they only give you 50%ish of the going used rate.

Craigslist is a great way to sell gear. Say your amp is worth $250 used. GC would give you $125, if you post it on CL for $200 you come out on top and someone else gets a good deal.

Whether GC is going to give you X or Y amount is somewhat secondary. The main thing is that when you sell your amp(s) you get to ask what someone else wants to pay for it. You have the power. If you want GC to buy your gear, they are going to tell you what they will give you for it. They have the power. Different situations. If you want to name your asking price there's one way to go. If you just want to be (relatively conveniently) rid of something, and if they'll actually buy whatever that is, then that's another matter alogether.

Just mentioning this as the dynamics of CL and GC are two different things, and to expect one to act like the other, I believe, is a mistake.

I bought a $125 amp there, took it back a few months later to trade up and was offered $25. They got on Craigslist to find the price to offer me, said it was worth $75 currently and offered 1/3 of that.

It was my ad on Craigslist.

rule of thumb for buying used in a store is 25% less if it's rough.....

certain stuff just doesn't move on craigslist... I've had a cab on there for weeks. no takers. lowered the price. no takers. if listing it on craigslist equals not selling it, that equals $0. If i can get $150 for it as a trade in, why not do it? otherwise i'm out the $150 and i have a cab that i no longer want.

Retry the ad. With pics, tech specs, other details, etc... I think a well-crafted ad sometimes (but not always) can make a difference. Even on CL, despite it's rather limited formatting and customization, there are more and less attractive/more and less well-crafted ads.

I've actually had more success selling stuff with crappy ads than well written, thought-out ones. YMMV.

Another +1 for CL, just indicate that you want a local sale.
