Transparent Head/Pre-Amp/Receiver Solution?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello! First post on TalkBass....of course about GAS...

Recently I ran my bass through my home theater system by plugging directly into the receiver. Probably a dumb idea, but it sounds amazing! Awesome full, deep tone with no harshness that I find in most of the amps I try in stores. I tried the receiver with numerous speakers and it maintained its deliciousness with all of them. Now...how do I get that sound without having to worry about blowing surround sound speakers? I have an Avatar 4x10 at my disposal, but I am unsure of how to send a signal to it. Somehow run the receiver into the cab with a headphone tap or something? Or I am open to other suggestions, such as amps that could find that sound for me. I often record bass DI using my mixer, which sound good, but not quite as good as the receiver...so the receiver probably is not totally transparent...

I should also mention that the only true bass amp I have ever owned is a small practice amp...so the cab I have has only been used with a friends SansAmp RBI, which I dug on its most "neutral" settings...

Sorry for the long post and thanks for the help.

You could run the speaker out of the receiver into the Avatar cab, but really, it's the cab that will define how "hi fi" your signal is rather than the receiver. Pretty much all amps do a good job at reproducing your signal...it's just up to you which voicing or which EQ settings you like best. If you're looking for that hi-fi sound, I suggest getting a 3-way cab like an AudioKinesis Thunderchild, fEarful, Lophat, Avatar TB153...there is tons of info on these cabs and similar on here.

However, since bass amplification (to me) is all about creating a sound rather than reproducing one, a lot of us still like traditional bass cabs such as your 410. I wouldn't trade my Ampeg bass cabs for anything, either. But if you're looking for the "studio monitor in a bass cab" sound, check out some of those brands I mentioned.

I am going to stick with my Avatar cab, but a hi-fi cab would make sense. How would I use the speaker outs of the receiver specifically? I could open up a speaker cable and just go directly between the two? No problems with signal levels as long as the impedance works out?
