Traynor Bass Resonance Control

Can anybody explain what this control actually does? (I assume its the same on all their amps)

I have the DB800 head and when this knob is fully clockwise (labeled loose) my amp is almost entirely noise free. When i dial it back towards 'tight' there is increasing noise. When fully dialed to tight there is a crap load of noise and i'm wondering if this is normal. Maybe if someone could explain what this knob is actually doing it would make sense to me. I know i should go with trusting my ear but i cant hear much difference other than this noise it seems to inject.

btw this is happening even at bedroom level.

Edit: I should add that this happens even with the mute switch engaged. So its nothing to do with anything going into the amp.

Generally "presence" and "resonance" or "damping" controls affect something in the power section itself. I'd expect this control would typically change the character of the low end from "tight" to "loose" by rolling off sub lows and giving a "faster" feel. I'm only familiar with it on guitar amps, but generally it becomes more audible at rehearsal/gig levels.

Sounds like something's not right though. I'd recommend taking it to a tech.

Its under warranty so i'm not too worried about it. I was just curious to if anyone else experienced the noise.

I would still like to know exactly how the knob works also.

will probably control the amount of feedback for a certain frequency across the output stage

Here you go, right from the owners manual.

"The Bass Resonance control adjusts the amount of low frequency damping of the amplifier. Turning the control clockwise towards Loose reduces the damping factor and allows the resonance of the speaker cabinet to be more pronounced. Setting the control towards Tight increases the damping factor to achieve a punchier sound."

I've been playing an original YBA200 ever since they came out. Over the years I have ditched the ported cabs and gone sealed. I normally run a Berg NV610, but sometimes run a cheap Acoustic B410. I started running the resonance control off back when I used ported cabs and never changed. My band was playing a CCR song in practice the other night, so I moved the resonance toward the loose setting to about 6. It was like magic. The rig sounded way more punchy and full than ever before. I've always loved the Traynor, but now I'm in awe of it's abilities. Is this resonance setting more similar to an SVT's hard wiring?
