Traynor YBA-1 and impedance

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everyone !

I own a traynor YBA-1 and a traynor YT-15. The amp sounds great but one of the speakers begins to ''ZZZZZZ''. I am looking for something a bit louder than this stack. I don't know a lot about impedance, but my head is 45w at 8 ohms and my cab 180w at 16 ohms. I want to know : if I change the cab, can I get something louder ? Will my amp be more effective if the cab power handling capacity is closer to the amp power and impedance ?

Thanks for your help

Wellll...
Nothing is going to make your amp more powerful, unless, of course, it is not running to its fullest potential at present, and needs servicing. If everything is up to snuff, a more efficient speaker may make it sound and "feel" louder. The YBA-1 is a great amp - but it's a better guitar amp than bass amp in most situations. You may want to also try jumping the inputs (into one jack on one channel, out of the other jack on the same channel, and finally into the second channel). Both volume controls will be active, which will give you a little more oomph. Output power is subject to the capabilities of your output transformer and power tubes.

With tube amps, it's best to match impedances or err on the side of lower impedance speakers rather than higher...the opposite of solid state.

In general, most 212's and 410's will play louder per watt than a single 15. Try some 8ohm cabs with more than one speaker in them and make sure to use your amp when trying them. Some ported cabs don't get along so well with tube amps, others no problem. With 45 watts I'd look at stuff that gives up some deep lows in favor of high spl (more sound coming out per watt going in).

Isn't the YBA-1 a tube head? You should be matching the output impedance of the head to the cab - ie, you should not be connecting a 16 ohm load onto an 8 ohm output transformer winding. Some tube amps/transformers are rugged enough to handle up to 100% mismatch, but it's usually better for the amp and tubes to go lower than it is to go higher if you are going to mismatch (less chance for arcing across the tubes, shorting the transformer). Could be the source of your buzzing.

The YT-15 is a 2x15, so i will look for a 8 ohms 4x10 ( more speakers and more highs like you guys told me ). My buzzing is coming of only one speakers so I know it is a cab problem. Any ideas for the 4x10 ?
