Traynor YBA-3 help! Mids?

Sign in to disble this ad
So, i usually play P basses. If i don't it's usually, then, an active bass with an onboard EQ.

I recently got a suh-weet SX shortscale Jaguar with a passive J/J set-up.

Now, while it sounds great on my GK400rb (with mids-for-days), in my full-tube Traynor, it gets a bit more scoopy than i like.

I had this problem before, on my Kustom200, and i was told that; since it has only controls for Highs, Lows and Volume... the volume knob kind of acted like a mids booster.

I haven't played my SX Jag in a band setting, so i haven't tested the volume theory out with my Traynor... but is that the same thing here?

FYI: The Traynor's controls are as follows:
-Master Volume
-Volume
-Treble Expander
-Treble
-Bass
-Bass Expander
-Presence

And then it has two switches that boost Treble and Bass (respectively) even more.

At home, i've just boosted the lows a bit more... but Bassy Bass isn't the same as cutting Mids!

The expander controls are kinda the mid controls along with the presence control .... there was a discussion of this some time ago in the Yahoo group message page .... there have been several revisions of the amp when it was produced, so you need to check the schematic thatis on the top of the metal amp case, is your amp a "pop top" ( the top actually comes off, when you remove the 4 screws ) or does it slide out of the head box?, is it a master volume or a non-master volume .... the reason I'm asking, some versions of that amp had a better sounding mids, but being a turret wired amp it is pretty easy to mod, if you know what your doing .... IMHO

You can also roll off the bass and treble and raise your master. Presence is typically an upper mid control.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll be trying some stuff out, for sure!

I don't know what version my amp is, but here's a pic of the front of it:

Nice I used to have that head! I found it's generally mid scooped, and with a jazz bass you'll really gonna notice. I think you precisions were hiding that on you.

But, the expanders are basically low mid and high mids, so the best you can do is set it all flat raise the presence to around 6 and the expanders to taste. Also make sure you 'volume' or gain is around 6-8 if it's not pushed a bit the mids dropped out on me.
Cheers

Awesome! Thanks for that! I'll be trying that this evening.

Your Custom Special pictured above is the third and final version of the amp. It's the "Pop Top" version as mentioned above and should have a schematic diagram taped to the underside of the top. Remove the four top screws lift it off and look on the underside and it should be there.

Your YBA-3 has the master volume which only the third version had. I can tell you the date of manufacture by the serial number if you want to post it here or PM me.

Here's a pic of my 1973 YBA-3 Custom Special.

Enjoy.

This is my first time posting on this board, ever! I came across this board while researching some newer gear. I'm a huge Traynor fan, so I found this thread in the search.

I figured I would joing the party and post pics of my Traynor rig! It's incredible and I've been giging/touring with it exclusively since I got it. I may start to switch it up a bit (hence my searching), but this head will be with me forever.

I also had this 2x15 before I got the YC-810. Another great cab, but I fell in love with the response of the 8x10 and I couldn't afford both. It was loaded with EV's and sounded incredible!
