Traynor YBA200 burning smell

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I just got a Traynor YBA200 used from a long and mcquade for a great deal. I plugged it in last night and started to notice a burning smell. I kept playing for about 2 hours and finally the amp went into protection shut down.

I tried it again today and it played for about an hour with slightly less of a burning smell. I couldn't get it to go into protection.

Is the burning smell typical for these amps? Should I take it back under the used warranty?

Thanks!

No amplifier should smell like it's burning. Clearly there is something wrong. Stop using it and take it back for repairs or return before further use.

+1 on getting it checked over by a experienced TUBE amp tech. But When I got my SVT2 sent here(AUS) from Florida, it had a burning smel for about 10 mins(after we switch the tranny taps to 240v) everything was A-OK-(I was still AT my tube tech's house) & turns out it was just dust & stuff from the transit. But it NEVER went into protect mode.
So-- yep- get it checked, Usually a pretty simple & cheap fix & you've the knowledge of it being A1 after.

When I got my reeves a couple months ago, I had a problem with one of the tubes going bad. Basically, when the tube was going bad I didn't really notice anything too strange for a little while. But then when it went bad, I noticed a burning smell, which freaked me out a little bit. Turns out that since the tube was going bad, it drew too much voltage and blew the screen resistors on the tubes - that's what the burning smell was in my case. It didn't turn out to be a huge problem for me, but I immediately stopped playing when it happened, so I don't know about your case. Bottom line, it's never good to smell burning, ever.

Cool, thanks guys. I'll bring it back to L&M on Monday and get it checked out under warranty. Thank goodness for warranties on used stuff.

I have used a Traynor YBA200-2 for a couple of years and never experienced burning smell.

No amp should ever exhibit a burning smell. When you experience that sort of this it's time to stop, unplug the unit and bring it to a tech for a check up.

Never continue playing an amp that smells like something is burning.

Use common sense.

You have to remember that the amp has four tubes that get really really hot. If the amp has a bit of dust on it it can cause a burning smell - something like when you fire up your furnace for the first time going into winter. Take it in to L&McQ and have them check it out for your peace of mind especially if it started to protect itself.

L&M ended up sending the amp back to Traynor. I'm kinda hoping they don't have to do -2 upgrade because I'd love to tube roll some KT88s in this thing.
