Traynor yc-610 replacement speaker selection?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have had this old yc610 in need of speakers for over 8 years and always thought, one day I'm going to throw new speakers in that thing and see how it sounds. Well, that day has come.

From what I can tell I can't get original speakers anymore. I'd like to get the thoughts from any of you on what you would put in it. Because the cab is not worth much I'd like to keep it as affordable as possible.

My new Mesa Walkabout is what drove me to finally commit to fixing it up. I love the old meat and potatoes tone I can get from it and thought I'd like to pair it up with my vintage cab. This brings me to decide what impedance I wish to shoot for. The original used 8 ohm speakers with a combined impedance of 5.3 ohms. I most likely will stick with this but would like to get it lower down to 2 - 4 ohms.

Right now I'm looking at Eminence Alpha 10a's because they're cheap, designed to function in a sealed enclosure with less than a square foot of space each driver, and can handle 150 W RMS. Their low end response curve shows better then most of eminences other bass speakers.

What other speakers might you guys suggest?

When I reconditioned my YC810 cabinet last year I was faced with the same dilema. I choose to recone the originals, rather than replace them. Why? because I didn't want change the tone of the cabinet and I wanted to keep it original, and i'm glad that's what I decided to do. I found that the cost to recone was less than replacing them with new Eminence 10's.

One word of advise, if you do choose to replace the original Marslands, make sure the replacement speakers you purchase are designed for a sealed cabinet.
