Trouble with the GK Fusion 500 Gain Stage
I recently bought and have been tweaking the settings on the GK Fusion 500. It's a nice amp, and seems to have a lot of different tone capabilities. My other amp is a 135w all tube Bassman. I loved it, just wanted more clean headroom, some of that GK high end. My problem has more to do with the Gain stage, and the -14db pad and bass output rather than the actual amp.
My main bass is also a recent purchase, a Specter Legend 5 string with a pre-amp. My other two basses are a passive P-Bass, and an active Jazz Bass. I set up a gain and EQ profile that I was quite happy with on the Specter with the gain barely on, about 8 o'clock. But I since tried it with the P-Bass and Jazz and they were barely audible. So I turn up the gain and volume, and get a real nice sound. Both the P and J have comparable outputs, but the Specters output is SO much hotter it distorts in a real nasty way I didn't hear on the Bassman.
So I hit the -14db switch, and the distortion went away, but the sound and tone were just terrible. Like a wet blanket is thrown over the whole thing. I wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem, and how you might solve it. My thinking right now, is set up my A channel for the Specter, and my B for the other two basses so the outputs are fairly even. Downside is then I loose the ability to go from some cleaner nicer tones to that more aggressive just breaking up tone. Thanks guy.
