Tube amp cutting out-to standby?

Sign in to disble this ad
Setting up for tonights gig, our guitarist's tube Fender Deluxe kept going into-sort of- protect mode.
Turn on to stand by, then onto active & it'd be 'on' ok, then as soon as he hit a note, with it turned up a bit, it'd go off, almost the same as in 'standby' mode.
Any ideas?

My guitarists' Fender Deville had a bunch of bad solder joints. I'd start there. Could be a bad ground inside the chassis too.

That's the wise choice. You both live longer that way.

These amp's have pcb's etc, but d'ya reckon if we slide the amp outta it's box, we could SEE anything?
Or, we'd need the specs & tech time?

There was a design problem with the 22 watt Supersonic and Reverb Deluxe amps. My guitarist bought one new on Ebay and it had the same problem you described. He called Fender coporate in Arizona and they had him take it to a local warranty company. This local company worked with Fender to try and fix the problem (this involved replacing the channel switching board). The problem seemed to be fixed at first then returned. He called coporate again and they said return the amp and money was refunded.

He liked that amp so much that over a year later he called Fender to see if the problem had been resolved. Fender engineering stated it was. He just recently bought another one and has been happy ever since. It was a trying ordeal though and he almost lost faith in Fender. Your guitarist might have the first generation with the switching problem. Call Fender. They will want to know the serial number when you call.

Ok, thanks for that info. We did the gig ok. He used my Mesa Walkabout head into the Fender 2x12 combo's speakers & it sounded great! He said it was as good as the Fender, only different.
Says a lot, imo, for the WA's tube-like feel.
I used my GB Shuttle 6.0 &, as usual, had a great sound-I never feel any 'let-down' using this as a back-up.

I s'pose we'll have to get the Schematics from Fender, for our tube-tech.

Yeah, but they're unhelpful & they send the amps to the same tube guy I go to, & add on their middle man charge.
As it turned out, I just found another tube amp, this time for sale that needs work, so might go for two & a special deal
