Tube Amp Impedance Matching

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi folks,

A question about matching tube amps to speaker cabinets. I have a MusicMan with the 4/8 ohm selector switch. I want to match it to my Epi UL310, which is 5.3 ohm. Which setting should I use on the amp?
I need to learn more electrical theory....

At 5.3 Ohm Re, you are going to be between 6 and 8 ohms at most useable frequencies (and higher as the cone resonance) so I would use the 8 ohm selector which will be closest.

Getting the wrong match on a Valve amp (if this is a valve output stage) is less risky than it is for a solid state system. It wont "over current" in the same way and should not be a problem for the amplifier but you could have a loss of efficiency by mismatching (so it is quieter on one than the other).
