tube bass preamp?

Yeah, I play a Warwick pro fet 2 (125 watts 8 ohms, 250 watts 4 ohms) into a warwick 410 pro. It pumps out enough power and sounds good enough, but I don't generally get enough bass from it, I get a lot more twanginess from it. I like the clarity of it, but at the same time, I think a little more bass would benefit me. Enter the tube bass preamp - I have a couple old heathkit preamps for turntables/recording and the like, these are tube. It wouldn't take much effort to replace the tubes, as well as make it a little more suitable for bass - lower input impedance, lower pitched EQ, and a 1/4" jack output. I already have a solid state power amp that's about 150 watts/8ohms, so there wouldn't be much problem with appropriate power ampage.

however, I have a fender jazz that outputs a lot of treble through any amp - thought there seems to be better balance through tube rigs, would there be a change in bass response significant enough in overall sound to justify the work involved, or would I be better off doing something else?

Try using flats. Tubes per se do not change frequency response, any more than transistors do. It's all in how you design the circuit that uses them.
