Tube comp and dig amp - still get tube-like tone?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I have a MarkBass Compressore tube compressor and I am thinking about upgrading my Hartke 3500 TA! to a nice small digital amp. I generally dial in about 60% tube on the Hartke. If I had a tiny digital amp w/out a tube do you think the compressor would impart any tone? Is the tube in these devices actually used in-line completely (or just part of the circuit).

I find it hard to A-B it since I am still using the Hartke head and even the SS side of that amp sounds great to my untrained ears.

Thanks,
Mike.

I think that depends on which part of the tube sound you require, and which digital amp you plan on using.
I imagine it'll warm up nicely with the Compressore engaged (I hear nothing but good things about it), but I can't imagine it giving you any added growl, IMO.
I might be wrong, however, since I have only heard it, but never actually tried it myself.

Yeah - good point. I guess the Compressore is working to keep the dynamics within range - not so much getting a little overdriven.
