Tube Gurus - How critical is the tube driver in a hybrid amp for tone?

Sign in to disble this ad
Am tube rolling in a Meas Walkabout with 1 preamp and 1 driver tube. I'm assuming that the tube driver stage is used to boost the signal to drive the MOSFETS.
Is it as critical for tone shaping as the preamp tube?

FWIW, this amp is reasonably sensitive to preamp tubes and after spending a few hours and comparing 9 tubes I found that used original Telefunkens, Mullards, and a tube from Holland with the name worn away (presumably Amperex) sounded cosnsitently better than the others. Am curious if you think the driver would make as large a difference, or, should I just be looking for low noise and microphonics and long life.
Am not sure that I have duplicates of the winners for a true test. TIA
