PV classic 400 is a MONSTER tube bass amp. And really inexpensive for what you get.

You don't say
Depending upon your power, price and tone preferences, the Ampeg V4BH, Traynor YBA-200, and Peavey VB-2 are all great options. Each one has it's own thing going on.

I think a Peavey C400 is selling or recently sold for like $400 right here. I'd look for one of those.

Peavey Alphabass. Great little amp, with a lot of tonal variety...

160 Watts @ 2 & 4 Ohms

Here is a video I did using an Ampeg 810E, Dan Electro Cool Cat OD, and Stingray Classic 4 -

(The camera's audio isn't the best, but, It will definitely give you an idea of available tone)

Is that my old rig that you're using?

Yeah, the AlphaBass is a good clean tube amp. It's even better when you get one with an 810e for $400.

Yeah, I'm jealous of you for getting a good deal, even if I made it.

Very true. I put maybe $20.00 in grille cloth and bought some bedliner. Cab and amp look 100X better now, also did some work on the head case so I can rack it. I love it, I am always sure to set the master to full then use the pre gain to set volume. You should hear the little guy with 2 810E's. It has the perfect amount of power for my needs. My 300T and SVT may be coming up for sale very soon. It has alot to offer for such little price...

VT or other pedal pre, solid state power amp is about the cheapest way to get to where you're going. Since you don't list a budget it's hard to say.

Al Cisneros used a V4B when I saw Sleep a few months back... Along with an SVT and one other head. Anyway, that's as good as any & I used to use a Bassman 135 and it worked until my guitar player got a V4 and 412.

Considering Sleep broke up in the 90's, you either meant a few years back (and have a liberal interpretation of "a few") or you're referring to Om.

Sleep reformed recently. I imagine they figured how much $$$ they could make due to the HUGE rise in doom metal fans...

Edit: my google-fu is failing me. Anyone know Sleep's 2011 tour dates, or just their current website?

AlphaBass is actually 170w @ 4 ohm, 160w @ 2 ohm. I read the manual online when I got it.

Anyways, that is not a sound that the AlphaBass can do in my opinion. An SVT or V4B will get you on the right road for sure. I put my SVT-II to 10, plugged in a P bass, and played on my 610 and it was sick. I see why people love 'em for it. It's just not my tone and that's why I sold it. I do like the tones, don't get me wrong, it's just not me.
